Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has a release date and new trailer

The highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,  part two of the Final Fantasy VII remake, has a release date! The game will launch on PlayStation 5 only February 29th, 2024 and will come on two discs.  Given just how much you can jam on a UHD blu-ray the fact that it’s on two disc could mean it’s either massive or will have a couple of movie’s worth of cut scenes in-game.

Like the previous trailer this doesn’t appear to show a slavish remake of the second part of Final Fantasy VII although this new trailer does show many more key locations. We also get to see Cait Sith in action and somewhat bizarrely, Chocobos that can climb cliffs. There also appears to be vehicles that you can drive, an awful lot of hair swishing and – yes! – a new dance sequence!

Producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed that the whole project will be split into three parts, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth and an unnamed third game – creative director Tetsuya Nomura said that some development of this third title has already begun.

“Making the middle part of a trilogy has its own challenges, but there are plenty of classic second instalments in the world of film that are defined by stunning story twists and deeper explorations of their characters,” says producer Yoshinori Kitase. “Often these second instalments become a favourite amongst the fans. In the same vein, we are aiming to make FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH an even more gripping and memorable experience than FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, so please wait a little longer while we finish up.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake was released back in April 2020 with the Intergrade version being released in June 2021. The Intergrade version added multitude of lighting and texture enhancements, as well as new lighting, 4K output, a new difficulty level, a photo mode, and a brand new episode featuring Yuffie. With this celebration stream lasting just ten minutes it would be the perfect time to give a recap of the iconic Final Fantasy VII and at least a teaser trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2.

In our review for Final Fantasy VII Remake, I said, ” How do you remake one of the most beloved video games ever made? Why would you even risk it? It would be like remaking Jaws, Casablanca, or the original Star Wars film. Final Fantasy VII was a sprawling saga spanning eighty hours of memorable characters, lengthy battles, and tearful heartbreak. There is no way Square Enix could do it justice… and yet they have. An utter joy to play from start to finish, packed with memorable scenes, moustache-twirling baddies, and epic battles. The first part of Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t just polished, it’s opulent.”

  1. I actually really liked the remake so they’ve earned my confidence with this next one. Still hoping they call the third one “Afterbirth!”
