Ubisoft’s XDefiant delayed, no new release date given

Ubisoft have announced that their new shooter, XDefiant, is to be delayed with no new release date. The official X / Twitter feed posted the news today.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent Public Test Session and continues to stand alongside us as we build XDefiant,”reads the announcement. “The PTS once again showed us your appreciation for our fast-paced gunplay, uniquely crafted maps, objective-driven modes, and iconic Faction roster. But it also surfaced some inconsistencies in the game experience that we need to address prior to launching our Preseason. So we’ve made the hard decision to delay the preseason of XDefiant.”

The statement does say the team will continue to work on the game so it’s not cancelled, but it’s clearly not going to be a quick job fixing the ‘inconsistencies in the game experience’.

XDefiant, or as it was known back them, Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, was revealed back July 2021 as a franchise-wide crossover multiplayer shooter.  The game was to draw on 21 years of Tom Clancy games, typically with a more tactical edge to the action. This game, however, focusses on a more “fluid and visceral” game style that might feel a little bit more Call of Duty than Rainbow Six.

In March 2022 Ubisoft  stripped the Tom Clancy branding from XDefiant as it wanted to add new factions from beyond the TC universe.

In XDefiant, you’ll take part in 6v6 battles with players picking from Factions to play as and the characters – Defiants – that make them up. There will be plenty of high-tech abilities, with the factions defining your role in the battle, but with your character being customisable and having no limitations on weapons you can choose.

We went hands on with the game earlier this year and came back with positive vibes. “I really enjoyed my hands-on time here, and XDefiant’s smooth and satisfying gameplay matched to an approachable progression system,” said Dom.

XDefiant Key Features

  • Personalised Playstyle: Players can personalise their Defiant to match their playstyle. Players can choose a faction, traits, abilities, and ultras, then select from an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, attachments, and a device to complete their loadout – and even tweak it on the fly (after respawning) to adapt to an ever-changing battlefield.
  • Competitive Clashes: XDefiant offers a variety of competitive 6-v-6 arena and linear game modes, such as Domination and Escort. Combine that with a large pool of uniquely designed maps in rotation and no two matches will feel the same.
  • Game modes: XDefiant will have a variety of game modes to match players’ unique playstyles and allow them to channel their team-based, competitive nature. Players can choose competitive modes like Team Deathmatch or Domination, as well as linear modes such as Escort.

XDefiant will be a free-to-play title coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Luna and Stadia, with full cross-play expected to be ready for launch. Whenever that is.
