The Grunting Ox AKA Jeff Minter, founder of indie darlings Llamasoft, has announced yet another new game for PlayStation Vita.
“19 years ago saw the release of one of the best games Llamasoft ever made, a game which came to be recognised as one of the best games on an entire system – Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar.”
“I’ve often thought that one day I would like to revisit that game and do some kind of an updated version on modern hardware,” commented Jeff.
“We’re going to give you a perfect treat for your eyes, ears and thumbs with a modern extrapolation of one of the best shooters ever made on hardware that’s just perfectly suited for it, and in a way that retains the purity of the original design.”
“It’s going to be *awesome*”
You can check out a video of the original Tempest 2000 at the top of this page, and there is a free version of the original Tempest for Google Chrome which you can play by tickling this link.

Awesome news! That’s made my day. (And makes me want to dig out the Atari Jaguar … )

That was my first thought too! I only ever played two games to death on my Jaguar, Tempest and Alien vs Predator, and I can still hear Tempest’s soundtrack now!

I played the really really old Tempest on a PS2 Atari Collection (i’m only 20 wtf), looked basic but was fun. Cool.

Whats with all these indie games for VIta. More full games that show what the VITA can do is whats needed. Thats what i bought it for.

Not really my cup of tea. Each to their own though.

Well as long as it doesn’t turn out like tempest 3000 on the Nuon I’ll be happy to give this a look!
As for the Jaguar, it is still alive! Was at a gaming show in France last weekend where there were plenty off jaguars to play on & a couple of new games were made in a 24 hour coding competition. Another world is out of it in June too. The enhanced version of it to boot!
