The Definitive Lara Explained In New Tomb Raider Trailer

Crystal Dymanics has released a new trailer explaining the changes that have been added to Tomb Raider Definitive Edition in comparison to the original release on last gen consoles and PC. The most obvious change is the graphical upgrade to the environments and Lara’s character model.

The other upgrades revolve around the physics of how objects react when players interact with them, as well how objects move while not being used. The latter examples use the arrows and axe which either jostle or swing as Lara navigates the environment, instead of just remaining stationery while Lara moves.

There’s also been an upgrade on how light and various liquids react when coming into contact with skin. The lighting is more dynamic so will shift as Lara moves, while blood and water also react when hitting the skin. There is an example of water moving across Lara’s forehead in the trailer above.

It was also revealed recently that Tomb Raider Definitive Edition would run at 30FPS, and will release at the end of the month on PS4 and Xbox One.

  1. Got my pre-order ready, I’ve been neglecting my PS4 and this’ll be a saviour until inFAMOUS comes out.

  2. As someone who’s played through this on the PC (at a higher frame-rate) and as a *feigns shock and horror* grown-up… Wow! That texture mapping is stunning with the mud, blood, etc., drying. I had my game running on max settings and it did NOT look like this. Sure, the environments will be very similar but I’m hugely impressed with the upgrades to her specifically, as well as the items now having physics (pick axe hanging correctly and swinging around with gravity acting on it accordingly, etc). Let alone the detail on her face when up close. I prefer how the old Lara looks from an aesthetic perspective. She had a nice look. However, technically, well done! This looks great and I’d happily trade in 60 FPS for 30 FPS if I knew it ran with this level of detail.

  3. So, in 6 months time we can buy an additional “definitive ultra plus edition” which runs 60fps? :)
Loved the ‘last gen’ versions on both PC and PS3, but will pass this full price upgrade.

  4. Having missed out on it first time around, this should get me back onto my PS4.

  5. I like to see things swing and jiggle naturally

  6. Re-typologized :/

Made up and mistaken words aside, I’m looking forward to this. I missed out on it the first time around for one reason or another so it’ll be good to finally get my hands on it, even if it does have next-gen tax applied to it.

  7. I have completed this on PC but I’m seriously considering getting this for my PS4 if not only to have another game to play on it. The upgrades actual look like a big difference and I’d happily go through the game again. It’s like a grittier Uncharted in my opinion.

Also after just watching a trailer Capcom’s ‘HD Definitive edition’ of Resident Evil 4 on PC, Crystal Dynamics has just kicked Capcom’s ass.

I hope Square-enix finally get the sales they were hoping for with this rerelease of Lara.

  8. Is it just me or does that trexx thing on the hair make it look a lot worse? I get that each hair is calculated individually (and that’s clearly impressive) but I can’t help but think it looks way too much like wire now, not hair.

    • The close up looked nasty but the normal camera view makes it look lovely pretty much all of the time. It’s very impressive (if it’s the same as the PC version). However, they’ve optimised it so it might be even better.

  9. It can’t be definitive unless they’ve added some proper tomb raiding. Anyway, i enjoyed Tomb Raider but i’m in no rush to play it again, i’m more interested in seeing what Lara does next.

  10. I didn’t get this on the PS3 so I think the PS4 version might be a purchase!
