Here we are again, taking a look at the critical responses to the latest releases, which in this case is CD Projekt’s much anticipated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Based on the fantasy novels of Andrzej Sapkowski the immense open-world game contains an estimated 100 hours of gameplay, with a satisfying 50 hours required just to complete the main storyline.
The action-RPG sequel releases on the 19th of May for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
It seems that the game has been very well-received by critics, and that’s without the expected day-one patch in place, which may improve things even further.
IGN – 9.3/10
“Though the straightforward and fetch-quest-heavy main story overstays its welcome, the option of joyfully adventuring through a rich, expansive open world was always there for me when I’d start to burn out. Even if the plot isn’t terribly interesting, the many characters who play a part in it are, and along with the excellent combat and RPG gameplay, they elevate The Witcher 3 to a plane few other RPGs inhabit.”
Gamespot – 10/10
“Make no mistake: this is one of the best role-playing games ever crafted, a titan among giants and the standard-setter for all such games going forward. Where the Witcher 2 sputtered to a halt, The Witcher 3 is always in a crescendo, crafting battle scenarios that constantly one-up the last, until you reach the explosive finale and recover in the glow of the game’s quiet denouement. But while the grand clashes are captivating, it is the moments between conflicts, when you drink with the local clans and bask in a trobairitz’s song, that are truly inspiring.”
Destructoid – 8/10
“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a huge step up from its predecessor, mostly because it manages to tell a more compelling and personal tale. At the same time, that intimate feel is juxtaposed against a gigantic, sprawling open-world adventure that may hit some snags along the way but still comes out on top.”
Metro – 9/10
“A colossal achievement in technical terms, with a level of interaction with the game world and its inhabitants that is unsurpassed in modern video games.”
Kotaku – Yes
“Wild Hunt is a grand adventure that feels distinctly of its time. It manages to set new standards for video game technology while accentuating the fleeting nature of technological achievement as an end unto itself. It is a worthy exploration of friendship and family, mixing scenes of great sorrow with scenes of ridiculous lustiness, tempering its melancholy with bright splashes of joy and merry monster guts. Come for the epic showdown between good and evil; stay for the unicorn sex.”
The Telegraph – 5/5
“I have never felt like I was wandering a more compelling world, or a more convincingly created one, except perhaps the broad expanse of Red Dead Redemption’s West. Fittingly, it feels as though that’s where CDProjekt RED have taken the most inspiration from, in terms of design, littering their world not with dungeons but with events, small vignettes for you to engage with, or not, depending on your inclination.”
GamesRadar – 4/5
“Sloppy combat and ongoing optimisation can’t quite spoil this dark fantasy adventure, set in a stunning world of blood and black magic.”
Game Informer – 9.75/10
“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt encompasses what I hope is the future of RPGs. It stands out for its wonderful writing, variety of quests and things to do in the world, and how your choices have impact in interesting ways. Usually something is sacrificed when creating a world this ambitious, but everything felt right on cue. I still think about some of my choices and how intriguing they turned out – for better or worse.”
Gametrailers – 9.8/10
“After spending more than 100 hours in The Witcher 3, we’re still left with dozens of side quests to complete, enormous tracts of land left to explore, and monsters yet to fight. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a thoughtful, diverse, and frequently awe-inspiring adventure. Its stories are deep and satisfying, unafraid to touch on themes of personal character, presenting players with choices and consequences that aren’t about turning into a hero or a villain. In the end, it’s quite simply one of the best RPGs ever made.”
Playstation Trophies – 92/100
“Despite its vast scope, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt tells a personal, intimate and touching story, filled with characters you’ll love and hate, and stuffed with monsters to slay. I completed the main storyline in around 50 hours and – yes I know this is a cliche – I’ve barely scratched the surface. The Witcher 3 is an astounding achievement.”

GTOWN
I’m so tempted but with Elder scrolls coming up and a gang of us waiting to play it’ll have to wait. But I’ll be getting it.
Carrot381
I took the chance and pre-ordered this so I’m really pleased to see it get such a favourable reception.
It’s also nice to see the reviews out prior to the release for a change.

Was going to wait for this to drop in price before picking it up, especially with my backlog of shame (The Order 1886, The Handsome Collection, Destiny, Mortal Kombat, Project CARS…). And Arkham Knight is going to be a must buy for me next month. After checking out some of the reviews, I don’t think I can wait. Also, I can see this being one of those games that doesn’t really drop in price for ages. (Yeah, that is me trying to talk myself into pre-ordering it)

Have this pre ordered on the U.S. Store.
Couldn’t wait before. These reviews have not helped!

I’m glad it’s got great reviews. I was sold on first impressions anyway, although I’ve Witcher 2 only briefly since I’m very excited for Witcher 3.

I’m relieved as much as anything, a huge achievement from the humble devs. Got a great deal too at £35 PS4 from Tesco. Fortunately I’ve a week off soon after It comes out.
matthangzhou
Yeah I have the end of May off too. Got $50 for £26 so think that’s a brilliant price for a new ps4 game
RudeAwakening
Excellent. I have it pre ordered and I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.
Ouninpohja
Been keeping my eye on this for ages.
Only thing (slightly) putting me off,is that all of the gameplay I’ve seen so far is 3rd person only.
Is first person view available too?
