What We Played #226: SOMA, Forza & Gremlins, Inc.

Greetings once more and welcome to another edition of What We Played, the piece we put together each week that keeps you up to date on all the shenanigans and tomfoolery that the staff here at TSA have been getting mixed up in. Or at the very least, we’ll just tell you what games we’ve been playing.

Dave starts us off this week with a couple of reviews. He played Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, which he said was “okay but had a few problems,” and then a bit more of The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes before putting the final touches on his thoughts. From there he moved onto Gremlins Inc. on PC, and then tried a bit of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend. He’s also got the final episode of Life is Strange queued up, and he’s been playing 80 Days on iOS during his commute.

Next we have Mark, who spent a good chunk of his week with Forza 6, which he says has replaced Driveclub as his go-to racer. He said he loves the way the cars handle and he’s had great luck with the spin rewards, netting both a million credits and a Bugatti Veyron. After his days at the track, he also had time for the final episode of Life is Strange. He’s been pretty thrilled with what he’s seen so far, and said he thinks the final episode is setting up to be an explosive finale.

Tuffcub began his week with Destiny, but seems to be pretty frustrated with the lack of rewards after putting a lot of into the Iron Banner. He then checked in with Batman: Arkham Knight, which he says looks great but just feels like more Batman. Like so many others who played that game, he mentioned the Batmobile and how poorly it’s utilised, and specifically said he’s like a few more wide open roads without all the twists and turns. He finished his week with a few of his staples: Transformers, Super Stardust Delta, and Broken Age on Vita.

As for Stefan, he had an interesting week but I’ll let him tell the tale.

So the end of last week actually finished with a boat load of Rainbow Six Siege, which you can read, watch and hear about in my preview. This then gave way to more than a bit of WRC 5 for review, a relatively competent fresh start for the rallying game series, the outstanding finale from Life Is Strange, some digital board gaming with Dave for Gremlins Inc. and a short story in videogame form called Murder…

Miguel spent his week with his Vita, playing Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc. He also had the chance to check it out on PlayStation TV for the first time and says it fits well on the big screen, and that he’s been enjoying the story refresher.

Then we have Kris, who spent his week with a 2D, pixel art, sim management game by the name of Kingdom. The goal of this game is to ride through your kingdom, upgrade things as you see fit, recruit new subjects, and prepare your defenses for a nightly attack. He says it’s a fun game that gets pretty tense.

Dom has spent a bit of his week away from home, but that hasn’t stopped him from going all RPG on his video games. He’s been playing Devil Survivor 2 on 3DS, and Tales Of Zestiria and Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition on PS4, the latter of which you can expect to see a review on in the coming days.

That just leaves me, and it’s been a pretty scary week in my video game world, as I started and finished Soma on PC, which is every bit as great and scary as TC said it was in his review. I also downloaded Flight Control HD on Steam, and I’ve been playing that in small bursts when in between projects.

Well, how about that? We made it through another week. But there are more tales of gaming to be had, and they’re just below here in the comments section. If you don’t see yours down there, it’s because you’re a silly goose and haven’t told us what you’ve been up to. Head down there and take care of that, would you?

  1. A fair amount of Rocket League; a successful run on CoD Ghosts Extinction (Exodus DLC); platinumed Tales From The Borderlands; and a couple of chapters of Until Dawn.

  2. The usual Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel and Dying Light co-op with Forrest, Pixel and berzerka.
My main gaming time was split between 2 games, WRC 5, which I have obtained the platinum for, and The Talos Principle, which I would have had the platinum for if they hadn’t decided to add the 4 trophies for the Road to Gehanna expansion into the main trophy list (as the puzzles in the expansion are particularly challenging so far).

  3. Destiny for me again this week and I’m officially hooked. The Crucible has seen most of my time (still trying to get that pesky “triple kill” trophy) but I think I’ll turn my focus to the campaign and Strikes once I’ve maxed out my Hunter sub-class (should have it done by the end of this weekend).
Excited to get my first Exotic weapon from Xur this evening too :D

    • Triple kill actually seems harder than it is – Control or something similar would be the mode to do it in. Anything where a few people would be huddled together around an objective for some reason.

It can be done normally with gunfire, grenades or melee of course, but the super would probably be the best way to do it (which is how I did it I think) – Its just a matter of time before you have one of each class together at some point, then just Nova Bomb, Titan Smash, Golden Gun etc.

I guess what I am saying is keep the faith guardian. It’ll come. ;)

      • “I guess what I am saying is keep the faith guardian. It’ll come. ;)”

You’re not wrong. Dinged the trophy last night. Was pretty great actually: got my first Exotic from Xur (a Rocket Launcher of some sort), took it for a test drive in the Crucible and got a 4x kill with my first shot :D

  4. Just Bloodborne again for me. Finished the main story and managed to get all 3 endings so just the chalice dungeon boss to get to and beat till I grab the platinum.
Hopefully be finished over the weekend.

    • Best of luck. I gave up with the Chalice stuff in the end. I love getting platinum trophies but those dungeons were so boring (a real shame given the rest of the game is basically perfect, in my opinion)

      • Thanks. I’ve been swapping between the dungeons and the main game anyway so only a few left to get through. I find them more frustrating than boring – particularly trying to find those bloody bell ringing summoner things.

  5. Thankfully finished The Order 1886. Such a shame how it turned out, so much potential…

Then started Wolfenstein:The Old Blood but soon got fed up with the stealthy bit against the tethered super soldiers on the first level so gave up and went back to the Witcher 3 and have been there every evening since.

Well into the second act now, and it does seem like the story is starting to race towards a conclusion… which I’m strangely both pleased and miffed about! Hopefully though I can complete it in the next week or so and then take a short break before diving into another open world RPG with Fallout 4.

  6. Just platinum life is strange, such a good game with a mediocre ending but can’t take away the brilliance behind it, plus helped with my platinum drought.

Just been playing uncharted, while waiting for fallout 4. Tempted to buy everybody gone to rupture on the PSN sale but not 100-% sure either that or zombi army trilogy

  7. Basically, my week has been pretty much the same as any other week. Dying Light Friday with the guys, Borderlands Monday with the guys (minus zerka) & a smattering of Destiny through the rest of the week.

I was however fortunate enough to be invited into the new raid on Sunday though & my warlock benefitted greatly from some new gear, carrying him over the 300 light threshold. Also did it on Wednesday as well with my hunter, but he was a little less fortunate, only picking up the ghost & a pulse rifle & can only muster 299 at present. Ooh, so close!

FYI – If Tuffcub has been playing Batman Arkham Asylum, there is no way that he has been using the Batmobile (& the frustrations that may come with that). That would be reserved solely for Arkham Knight. :)

Also, he will be pleased to hear that Bungie have said that they will be addressing the rewards for crucible in general, but specifically for Iron Banner (as they have realised that something has gone a little wrong on that front).

  8. Once again taking advantage of the double fame events, i reached level 48 in Driveclub.
I got a through a good chunk of The Witcher 3 this week and having completed the Batlle of Spoiler-free Fort, i’m now moving onto “Alopaecia hill”.. ;)
I picked up Rollers of the Realm for a few euros in the sale and it’s an interesting one, each level laid out like a pinball table, but being limited in objectives they aren’t like regular pinball games where you would want to replay over and over in search of a higher score.
And i played another lot of LBP3. While the feature which allows you to link levels together is cool, for instance having a hub level and then a number of linked levels spreading out from it as they’ve done in the story mode, i find it also means more loading screens as you jump from one to the next. And loading times don’t seem to be any quicker than last-gen. That’s one small gripe though, i’ve found plenty of cool community levels to enjoy.. including a few retro shooters, a fairly effective first-person Silent Hills/PT-like game… and a marvellous Bloodborne homage.

  9. More Driveclub yet again, plus a couple of hours splinter cell blacklist co-op with Avengerr. Enjoying both. Which is nice.

  10. By now I’m completely addicted to Virtue’s last reward, which I had for ages from Plus on my Vita, but had never tried it.
This is a gem of a game, nothing short of an absolute must-play.

    WOW…!

Easily among the very best storytelling in a game across all platforms.
If you have a Vita, like good mystery stories, like solving riddles, and like innovative games, then you got to try this. It’s like in between reading a good crime/sci-fi story and playing a game.

Only a shame I cannot play this on my main account, due to Vita’s account restrictions, would have been soon my next platinum.
