What We Played #288 – Nintendo Switch, Yakuza 0 & The Last Guardian

Having got up with just a couple hours of sleep under his belt in order to get up and cover the Nintendo Switch Presentation – alongside myself and Dave – Tef’s lucky enough to be playing the Nintendo Switch right about now. Will he be gunning down Inklings in Splatoon 2? Staring opponents down in 1-2-Switch? Well, just come back later today where you’ll see our first hands on impressions with the console.

Despite getting his regular sleep, it seems as though gaming is causing Miguel problems as he says he’s played so much Yakuza 0 and Tales Of Berseria that it’s made his eyes bleed. Now, I’m no physician but I’m pretty sure that’s not good. Still, he also managed to play Gravity Rush 2 and Overwatch, so either he fought through the pain, blinking away the tears of blood in an uber-macho display, or he’s a drama queen.

Aran meanwhile has had a genuine illness this week, but found the time to complete The Last Guardian, with Trico taking up a position as one of his favourite animal companions in gaming. Besides also making a start on Firewatch, he’s put in yet more time with Football Manager, with Ebbsfleet sadly looking as though they’ll miss out on promotion. Never mind mate, there’s always next season week.

Steve is finding it tough to game in-between real life, but really that shows a worrying lack of commitment. I’m sure his wife, children and colleagues would understand why he’s not done anything, and you know the saying “if you play it, they will just leave you alone”. Or something like that. Anyhow, he’s completed God of War 2, played some more Ratchet & Clank, and is working on a review of Memoranda. I’ll let you know if he takes my advice.

Tuffcub bet me that I couldn’t work out what he’d played, and though it’s not something I want to promote in the team – it’s like herding digital cats round here some days – I’m going to take a bash. Titanfall 2. Now, what do I win??

Rounding things out, Dave’s been objecting to nearly everything. Mainly as he’s been playing Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney for iOS, and continued Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice on 3DS. Besides that he finished up Dragon Quest VIII and played some Owlboy on PC.

Obviously I can’t let myself off the hook, so I’d better tell you that I’ve nearly finished Uncharted 4, and boy have I enjoyed it in the second half. Beautiful locations, great exploration and some of the best cutscenes and storytelling in any game have renewed my belief in the series after its lacklustre third outing. I’ve also found time for Overwatch, with a few competitive season games that really didn’t go to plan, and a few that did!

Now it’s over to you. What have you played these past seven days?

  1. Finally got some time off work and gave up my destiny addiction, couple Xmas with birthday and I have a wealth of games to plough through.
Strangely though I went back to fifa for a bit between infinite warfare and titanfall 2. Cleaned up the platinums for ffxv and batman and put a couple of hours into quantum break.

I’ve been a busy man and still have last guardian and dishonored 2 to start yet!

    • And Battlefield… The list is extensive. Best get back to it!

  2. Platinumed The Last Guardian.

Started Telltale’s Game of Thrones (finished chapter 1).

100%’ed the PayDay DLC in Goat Simulator.

Escaped for the first time in The Division Survival DLC (it’s tough)!

Had a few minutes on the Resident Evil 7 demo – need to go back to it – but thought it was pretty scary/tense (I’m ashamed to admit).

Went to give my PS4 it’s first clean since day 1 yesterday and realised I need a T9 Torx and only had a T10. Hoping to clear dust and reduce fan noise!

  3. XCOM, XCOM, shit, XCOM, XCOM, COME ON! XCOM,XCOM,XCOOOOOM! Doom original! WWE2k14, Mortal Kombat(which I discovered I am awful at as I’m not fast enough for it) and XCOOOOM!

What? Since I never get mentioned in the weekend thing, I’m stopping my giant texts. Not because I’m actually a bit cold and trying to be funny or anything.

  4. Started on AC Brotherhood on PS4. Played on PS3, but got nothing else to play!

  5. I completed the Titanfall 2 campaign, pretty good overall but as soon as i was done with it i added a tenner and traded it for TLG.

I started Watch Dogs 2 and i didn’t warm to my first session with it, so i’ve put it aside for now and i’m continuing Dishonored 2 which is fab, just arrived at the Clockwork Mansion.

Also checked out most of the plus content, nothing really noteworthy but i’ll probably hang onto Day of the Tentacle.

    • I didn’t enjoy WD2 to be honest when I started it, and didn’t warm to it as it went on, although it got easier as you unlocked abilities which erased some of the initial frustration. To be honest I was shocked TSA gave it 9/10 but each to their own.

      • Same. And not only did it score well in the review, it’s been raved about at any opportunity. I 99% sure the reviewer (Jim I think?) didn’t finish it, because it was a real slog by the end. Terrible characters, story and mechanics. 6/10 tops.

      • Agree with all sentiments regarding WD2. Played it a lengthy three times on separate occasions and I’m getting that dreaded feeling of forced gaming, not good. I’ll stick with it but I’m unimpressed so far.

      • Guess I’m the only one that enjoys it. I like the characters and the story aswell. Not really a slog well not for me anyway but the upgrades make a good test/challenge on certain missions.

  6. I have Platinum Goat Simulator Monday and currently on my 2nd playthrough on Mafia III…. strangely it’s more fun on 2nd time round I guess it’s because I don’t have to worry about side missions or collectibles :)
Also played a few online matches of Gears 4 for the new maps.

  7. Renewed my PS+ sub for the first time in a long while so I’ve been going through some of the free games:

Played through and 100%’d Journey, a game which I enjoyed on my first time through but will never go back to it now I’ve got the trophies.

Played a few rounds of Rocket League online to get the Platinum. Amazing game, one of my favourites at the moment.

Went back to Resogun, which is still awesome, but am going to need to brush up on my skills a fair bit before I get the final trophy I need (1cc).

Played a fair amount of TLOU online. The trophies are a grind (seriously, around 170 matches?!) but I love playing it. Nothing else like it on PS4 right now, which is awesome.

  8. I finished off Ratchet & Clank for the platinum, great fund from start to grindy end, and played the last few matches to get all the items and the platinum for Rocket League. I’m gonna work through my sales purchases next so I’ve loaded up Lego Star Wars to play the DLC and after I’ve rattled through that I think I’ll sink some time into Battlefront when my (pretty much) free fibre broadband upgrade kicks in. The January deals have very much worked out for me this year!

  9. The Last Guardian is a beautifully crafted game,I’m loving it. Titanfall 2 is still to be unwrapped and the new COD has been traded in being sadly a borefest.

  10. Played The Swindle and This War Of Mine, this months freebies on PS+. Both those games are brilliant. I wasn’t sure about this months giveaway but after playing both of them, i can quite happily say it’s been my favourite in years.

The Swindle is brutal though. Looks like it will be simplistic but is so unforgiving.
