Nintendo Warns You Not To Put Your Switch Near An Aquarium

Here’s a new one. Reacting to early reports of weak signal reception from the left Joy-Con in particular, Nintendo have posted some guidelines on how to avoid having the Switch drop the wireless signal. Hopefully Nintendo can boost the strength of the Bluetooth signal via a firmware update, but in the meantime, they want you to beware of things that can interfere or block the signal.

These include putting the console:

  • Behind a TV
  • Near an aquarium
  • Placed in or under a metal object
  • Pressed against a large amount of wires and cords
  • Within three to four feet of another wireless device, such as a wireless speaker or a wireless access point.

And that can include anything from this list:

  • Laptops, tablets, etc.
  • Wireless headsets
  • Wireless printers
  • Microwaves
  • Wireless speakers
  • Cordless phones
  • USB 3.0-compatible devices such as hard drives, thumb drives, LAN adapters, etc.

So, don’t put your Switch in an aquarium, don’t try to microwave it, and make sure it only lives in a hermetically sealed chamber.

Yeah, we really hope that Nintendo sorts this out sooner rather than later.

  1. After all those warnings about where the Switch can’t go I dolphink I have a plaice I could put it.

    • That’s terrible, mate.

    • Can’t believe you’re mackereling a joke of this. This cod be a serious issue for some people. Is anyone having an issue? Please let minnow.

    • Setting up the Switch optimally is going to be more of a haddock than i expected.

    • That is sharking

    • My Cod, that was awful!

    • To be fair, Ron. Don’t rush into things. Mullet over and see if there’s some fin else you can do so it doesn’t interfere with things. There must be a plaice you can put it or you’ll end up full of hake as you miss out on some pretty good games.

Anyway, best I don’t carp on about it. Conshoal yourself with the fact that you have the PS4, fortunately.

      • Amazing Mike, you’ve blown all the other puns out of the water! And Tef, you started it :)

    • Mike wins! Congratulations, you win a furry anchovy.

      • How could I not take the bait, fella. I had to… carpe diem.

    • Oh for fry’s sake, really? Fish puns? What a crabby way to comment! Yes, this is me being shellfish but come on! TSA is batter then this! Though, it is likely me talking pollucks as usual.

    • Who started these terrible fish puns? I’m going to hunt him down, and then eel be sorry.

      • Enough with the sharky replies!

  2. Bait and Switch.

  3. Picking mine up today. Planned to put it behind the tv (so missus didn’t know I bought it) next to my nas which is next to my router. Luckily my 6ft fish tank is about 5 meters away. Surely not going to be a problem….

  4. The reason for the left Joy-Con issue can be seen towards the end of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unZABUO5w60

Looks like the antennae in the left and right controllers aren’t the same (17’37 is where the guy notices the difference)

  5. Really? I…

Really? Laptops,PCs can affect it? Nintendo, did you even check? Granted, it is something that most of us haven’t considered but erm… if you’re in a 1 bed flat or studio flat, that is kinda hard not to get one of the items in the way.

Guess I best save up for a small garage just to play with myself. Using the Joycons.

  6. I read that mobile phones may also interfere? Which is a bit of a problem when the Switch voice chat is done via a mobile phone app.

    • Just. Wow. If true. Wow. *slow claps at Nintendo*

  7. Left Jo-Con is the new Left Shark
