Hot Wheels Unleashed announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and everything else

Best known for their racing on two wheels, Milestone has announced Hot Wheels Unleashed in partnership with the toy company Mattel. An arcade racer based off the Hot Wheels toys, the game will be coming to xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC on 30th September.

The cinematic announcement trailer obviously won’t be what the final game looks like, but it does show the game’s overall vision. Compared to most other appearances of Hot Wheels in video games, the game will be built using the iconic orange track that the Hot Wheels toys are known for in everyday settings. Things like wobbly bridge jumps, splits in the road and more will feature as you drift, boost, jump and smash the cars into one another.

The game will be playable in single player game modes, but there will also be multiplayer both online and offline through the use of split-screen. Additionally a track editor will let you create and customise tracks in any game environment and then share them with the game’s community.

There will be a broad range of Hot Wheels cars found in the game, each with different attributes and associated rarity levels, and they can then be customised further with a variety of different skins.

Developer Milestone is best known for their various motorbike racing series, from MotoGP 20 and Supercross 4 to the Gran Turismo-esque Ride 4. The last time they went for four-wheeled racing was with the merely OK Gravel, but the more focussed arcade action fo Hot Wheels Unleashed could be a better fit.

We can dream that Hot Wheels Unleashed will look this good…

“Like many other team members who worked on the game, I’ve been playing with Hot Wheels since I was a child, and today I’m still a hungry Hot Wheels fan and collector,” said Michele Caletti, Executive Producer, Milestone. “This is the reason why we’re all so committed in delivering the purest and most authentic Hot Wheels gameplay experience ever in a video game. We owe it to the Hot Wheels community and to our inner children.”

Hot Wheels has made licensed appearances in other video games, most recently with the Forza Horizon series. Forza Horizon 4 has just had a new Hot Wheels car pack released for it, but that’s nothing compared to the Hot Wheels expansion to Forza Horizon 3, adding a whole new region to the game and then covering it with gigantic orange track. That was a very different attempt at adapting the Hot Wheels property to this one, but which one is better? We’ll just have to wait and see in September.
