EA and Koei Tecmo are teaming up for what they hope will be a challenger to Monster Hunter’s crown as the best hunting game. The game will be in development at Omega Force – best known for the Warriors series and musou genre – with more details (like a name) coming later this month.

Details are pretty thin at this point, but his will be a new and original IP and it will be based in a fantasy feudal Japan.

“It’s an honor to be partnering with EA Originals and to have the support of a team with such an incredible track record of releasing groundbreaking new games,” said Yosuke Hayashi, Executive Vice President of Koei Tecmo “The EA team fully embraces our creative independence and have become invaluable partners offering both development and publishing support. Adding the global resources of EA with our own will help us introduce a new kind of hunting game to a global audience of players and expand our reach into global markets. I’m really looking forward to the day that gamers from around the world can play this new game.”

It’s a strange partnership, considering that Koei Tecmo is a game publisher that has a global reach, and that they’re working with EA under the EA Originals brand which has been most commonly used to fund and publish independent games like It Takes Two and Knockout City. On the other hand, Koei Tecmo’s reach is not on the scale of Capcom or Bandai Namco. The Warriors series and Nioh games are their best known in recent years, but they exist alongside notable collaborations like Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, Persona 5 Strikers and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. EA should be able to signal boost whatever it is that this game is, bringing much greater awareness to mainstream gamers.
