Adarakion Developer Diary: Issue 36

Ahh, a bank holiday weekend. Nothing better for getting odds and ends sorted.

However it would seem that this particular one has resulted in stuff other than code getting sorted! We, as a team are entering an exciting time, and something that I hope to be able to elaborate on more in the next few weeks, so a lot of my time has been spent organising stuff and preparing.

That’s not to say that progress on the code hasn’t been made – far from it, each time I grab the latest version it seems like significant progress has been made – I just grabbed the latest version whilst writing this and am gob-smacked at how much its changed since last time! Gob-smacked in a REALLY good way! Its interesting to see how the final project matches up with your vision for it. I’m pleased to say that at the moment, this project is exceeding my initial vision and expectations quite dramatically. Its hard for me to be more specific than that without releasing loads of details that I don’t know I can release yet, but trust me, with every passing week this thing builds into something even bigger and better. REALLY excited.

I guess what’s also exciting is that we have pretty much confirmed our next Project will be the C++ remake of Project Blast! (hoo hoo!). What I can tell you about this is that because of our new engine its going to not only look 10x better than the videos I released a few months back, but its also going to PLAY 1000000x better. Within our own engine we have bolted in a third party 2D physics engine which (from what I can gather so far) works really well and efficiently and will hopefully enable me to realise the initial vision for Project Blast! as the integration of the physics engine will allow for all my initial “must haves” with minimal effort on our behalf.

I cannot stress enough how far things have come since we started to write these diaries last year. We’ve switched projects, changed the team, gone from developing in Blitz to C++, implemented our (I say our, Matts) own engine, learned to use that, progressed from knowing precious little about C++ to understanding some of its more finer concepts (whilst far from being an expert)! When I look back at the last 6 months I’m really enthused about the next 6. What will I be writing about then? Cant wait to find out!

Just also thought I would take the opportunity to thank TSA member “AG2297“ for pointing me to the Sony pitch thread in last weeks diary. It was a really great read, and whilst we arent QUITE ready for a pitch yet, what it did was inspire me and push me in certain other directions which are starting to come to fruition now. So thank you for pointing that out, its an inspiring read!

A bit of a shorter diary for you this week Ill admit, however I’m preparing to tell you about numerous bits and pieces which will mean much longer entries and much more detailed and in depth. Exciting times ahead!
