The Features of Firmware 3.40

The main features of Firmware 3.40 have been detailed on the EU Blog. It’s not just PlayStation Plus you’ll be getting when your PS3 completes the download, you’ll also get your hands on some nifty upgrades to some of the XMB’s features, such as the Photo Gallery and Facebook support.

Aside from the main feature, the ability to download and use PlayStation Plus, the Photo Gallery has had an overhaul with users now being able to upload and comment on photos on Facebook or Picasa. You’ll be able to share these photos with your PSN friends and print them directly from the Photo Gallery, providing you have a printer on your network.

Along with this comes a new application called ‘Video Editor and Uploader’ on the XMB, where you’ll be able to edit, save and upload the video files stored on your PS3 directly to Facebook or YouTube. The PlayStation Store now has a five star rating system for games, so you’ll be able to give feedback on the content you download.

Additional power save features are also in place (hopefully no battery indicators), with the default setting for System Auto-Off being 2 hours.

Some Facebook features were recently added to the PS3, and 3.40 builds on this, with a new standalone application now being available on the XMB. This allows for your PSN profile on Facebook, the sharing of Trophies and purchases from the Store as before and this even allows you to send PSN friend requests to other users.

So, there we have it. Firmware 3.40 will also provide content for those not purchasing PlayStation Plus, and the Video Editor and Facebook applications look to be good.

  1. mmm facebook support, most important feature!

    • Definitely.
Although the rating system for PSN games is a nice addition also. :)
      Bring it on!

      • The ratings system is a nice idea but how many nobs are there on the PSN that would just rate everything 1 anyway?

      • I don’t see any point of the rating system.

      • So you don’t read reviews on websites before buying things? it’s a nice addition, although comments might be a lil better. however it could turn out like itunes where every other comment is someone bitching about not having the same content as NTSC/PAL. so as usual i sit on the fence with my own idea.

      • Yeah but a lot of people are like I do not like this one thing, one star.

      • It was like TSA’s old star system where, despite being a nob-free place, there’d always be someone who would abuse the star system. It was a nice idea, because it was good to receive 5 stars for something you’d say but like I said, it’s difficult for some people just to not click on 1 star.

    • mm, but hopefully it doesnt spam stuff to facebook, because othervise everybody thinks im a nolifer :D

  2. Sounds good, a few nice surprises. ;-)

  3. That update looks pretty darn good.

  4. This is gonna be great :D

  5. And it says it is coming later today. Perhaps to coincide with the US launch? 11PM GMT is 3PM PT

  6. This will be a great firmware update. PlayStation Plus and everything else. There’s some pictures over at the us blog.

  7. Echo…

What sort of useful feature is a video editor on the XMB? Also thought the PS3 already had auto-off.

One feature that would of made sence would of been the 3D Blu-ray update, would of helped puch a few more PS3’s and TV’s.

    • For anyone with playTV a video editor is incredibly useful! Iv probably got 40gb worth of adverts stored on my ps3 from recordings, that i would love to see the back of, lol. But other than playtv, ur right i dont see what use it could possibly have :/

      • actually, that’s the one this that would be useful, but still. But there’s still better features that have been suggested on PlayStation.Share.

      • Unfortunately this probably won’t help you. Firstly, you can’t edit any video that was on the XMB prior to firmware 3.40. No idea why. If they are small enough to copy to a USB storage device and back onto the XMB then you CAN edit them.

Having said that, in my brief experiment, it saves the video in a much lower res than you started – and you can only upload to Facebook or Youtube – not export back to the XMB.

Still a nice feature, and a great way to share video, but not what you were hoping.

      • So it really is useless. Ive just found out the hard way that I cant edit anything. :@
Also when it said facebook app I expected somthing to appear on the xmb, not some half arssed thing that we’ve got atm. Also Plus is a rip off as I’ve already got most of those games, for my anyway.
Where’s the photo comment thing and facebook picza uploader? Am i just missing it?

    • The PS3 does already have auto-off but they have now changed the default setting from off to 2 hours

  8. Sounds good to me. Not convinced by Playstation Plus yet but the Facebook features sound pretty nifty :)

  9. I’m looking forward to further Facebook integration, as sad as that sounds.

  10. That seems written different to how i originally read it, i could of sworn it said the application was actually on facebook and not on the ps3 system itself

    • This is what it actually says
As well as the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PSN application will be made available on Facebook. This builds on the previous connection with Trophies and the ability to share purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PSN and Facebook accounts with this new application, which allows you to display your PSN profile on Facebook, send a PSN friend request to friends on Facebook and add the PSN application tab to your Facebook Profile.

      Pehaps im reading it wrong
