July NPD: 360 Beats All

In a feat not seen since the launch of Halo 3 back in 2007, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 outsold all other game consoles last month.  The 360 continued to sell strongly following the release of the remodelled 360 S in June.

It was a fall in monthly unit sales of over 100,000 that saw the Nintendo DS lose its top spot to the 360.  All the consoles saw their unit sales fall compared to June as the American game-playing public take their traditional July and August holiday from buying consoles.  Overall unit sales for the month are down 23% to 1,394,300.

Hardware Sales

  1. Xbox 360 443,500 (-2% compared to June)
  2. Nintendo DS 398,400 (-22%)
  3. Wii 253,900 (-40%)
  4. PlayStation 3 214,500 (-30%)
  5. PSP 84,000 (-31%)

Looking back to July 2009, despite the console price cuts we saw last Autumn the dollar value of retail hardware sales has risen 12% to $313.8m.  The reason for that is the increase in unit sales of the 360 and PS3 which are up 119% and 76% respectively.  The Wii’s sales are roughly where they were a year ago, showing only a 0.7% rise while the DS and PSP have both recorded respective significant falls of 26% and 32%.

As an addendum to the software sales figures it is of interest to point out that StarCraft II sold 721,000 copies in American retail stores last month making it July’s top-selling game.  Even if you combine NCAA Football 11‘s sales across all platforms (360, PS3, and PS2) its total of 692,000 is still not enough to overcome SC2’s marine-filled bunkers with a EA-published zerg rush.  The next largest all-formats total was Lego Harry Potter with combined unit sales of 401,000.

  2. Not really surprised after M’soft released the newer model that “can’t RRoD”.

    It would be better to have usage stats, would be able to see the increase in users rather than consoles, I’ve had 1 failed PS3 but I bet the second was classed as a sale, and countless others on here have had to replace dud consoles with new ones, so would be interesting to see how many of those (and total) are new/unique users/buyers.

    • Also good to see the PSP is selling just as much as the PS2, although there’s no figures on the PS2 :s

      • Because NPD stopped reporting PS2 figures back in March. They might have sold similar amounts that month, but we have no idea since then.

        Note that you can extrapolate that NCAA Football 11 sold around 25,000 copies on PS2. One twelfth of the PS3 total.

    This type of shift, you know wii to ps3 to 360 is what the gaming industry needs to keep it fresh and everyone on their toes…

    • Agreed. Competition is good for us. (except when one of the big three pay to have a game made exclusive when it could have been multiplat)

  5. Xbox sales have always been rosy in the US but that’s impressive. The 360 S is doing a very good job as of recent.

  9. How many of those consoles were people replacing their fault ridden old 360?
    Also, it’s obviously going to sell more in USA like Sony and Nintendo sell more in Japan and most of the world.

  10. Ah shit, it’s my fault haha, I bought one – they made it more like the ps3 (glossy black, built-in hdd and touch buttons) I couldn’t resist for the price. Still I think with 3 ps3’s 45 games, move, GT5 and a few other ps3 titles on order, Sony can’t complain…
