The Xbox 360 is, globally, the best-selling HD console. It has a huge and devoted group of fans and consistently out-performs its rivals when it comes to online multiplayer.
There have been some absolutely stellar exclusives over the years, and while this year saw two of the biggest, often touted “exclusives” actually released on the PC too (see our Multiplatform award) there were still a few top-notch games to choose from.
Perhaps indicative of the landscape at retail, though, one exclusive was significantly more popular than the others. Even with strong contenders like Fable III, Crackdown 2 and Alan Wake, there would only ever be one winner in this category.
Our Xbox 360 Game of the Year is Halo: Reach

ericzap
By a large margin!
Guess since Mass Effect 2 is multiplat, always think of it as an Xbox exclusive for whatever reason.
Beelzie14
Brilliant tongue-in-cheek remark … how topical too based on yesterdays apocalyptic reaction to ME2 as multi-platform. :-)
Dan Lee
I’m getting concerned about the 360’s 2011 exclusive line-up (or lack of). A couple of Kinect games interest me, and Radiant Silvergun makes me get all fuzzy, but I hope MS announce some big hitters soon.
As for Reach; it’s the best Halo game I’ve played and a deserving winner, but I had more fun with Dance Central :oD *struts funky stuff*
Kovacs
Wait ’til you see the Top 100 round-up article I’m currently writing. That’s all I’m saying.
Dan Lee
Good stuff – looking forward to that!

About to say, PS3 had plenty of wonderful experiences playable only on it’s console. Xbox by comparison seems to have had a slow year. Halo was stellar of course and all the couch potatoes (console gamers) obviously played my GOTY, Mass Effect 2, on the ‘box. But with games like God of War 3 and ModNation Racers, I felt the PS3 did a bit better this year.
yobrenoops
I think its more about Microsoft wanting to give Kinect a big run on it’s own. I’m sure there’s stuff in the pipe that will blow our collective cocks (or fannys) off.

I never knew Radient Silvergun was out on xbl until you just mentioned it. It is perhaps my most wanted shooter ever. Pity I’ve never owned a Sega Saturn and the game is as rare as rocking horse ****
Dan Lee
It’s definitely out in Japan next Spring, but seeing as how Ikaruga is on LIVE over here, I can’t see why RS won’t make the jump here too. I simply cannot wait; I’ve got a Saturn that can play it, just not the £100 for a copy of the game :oD
jimmyjrg
if halo came out on ps3 i’d buy it :P
wayne
did you actually play halo reach? worst graphics iv ever seen (nearly) xbox is welcome it as an exclusive, now im not saying there wasnt a time when halo was the best around and i as a ps owner toiled with the possibility of owning an xbox solely for 1 game as i loved it so much but that time has come and long gone now as the last 2 halos killed the franchise for me.
ARUMIR
Halo can stay away, I’ll take Fable
Flaming Turkeys
I agree. Call me an ignorant fool if you like but halo did nothing for me. I’d take fable any day.
yobrenoops
Unsuprising and predictable (not that I’m saying it’s an incorrect choice).
Grey_Ghost13
Is it me or does that list of exclusives not look that appealing? I’ve heard many good things about them but generally pretty negative points too! Only the winner seems to be the best from what I’ve heard and seen (probably why it won and by such a large margin!) but I’ve heard that Fable III and Crackdown 2 were not as good as they’re previous incantations and Alan Wake was a bit dissapointing.
Dan Lee
I’ll echo my sentiments from the Wii piece – for me it’s been all about the downloadable titles this year. I have a handful of decent boxed games, but a hard drive stuffed full of quality :o)
Grey_Ghost13
I dont really get exposure to the 360 downloadable titles, so don’t know much about them. It’s just what I get to play round at the family members that have gone over to the dark side, well that horrible green colour side :)
yobrenoops
I think some of the issue is that some of what console-warriors consider 360 exclusives actually have PC release which would end up on the Multi-format chart.
When you remove those the 360 list looks a little anemic.
SpikeyMikey23
i bought the mrs alan wake and fable 3, theres not as much to do in fable3 as in 2 apparently, and she finished it in 2 days. Shes enjoying alan wake though but i also got her AC2 to see if she likes it and now she’s plowing her time into that lol.
cc_star
Pretty much what I’ve heard too, can’t even think of any 2011 exclusives either (Kinect aside, obviously) other than that Crytek game which will probably be 2012 at the earliest.
Dan Lee
Gears 3 will be the big one. After reading ‘Anvil Gate’ I can’t wait to play the game.
SpikeyMikey23
what is ‘Anvil gate’?
Dan Lee
Anvil Gate is a book that details what happens between Gears 2 and 3 (as well as some back-story). Glad I read it because a) it’s a great read, and b) I now have a clear understanding of what’ll be going on at the start of the game.
cc_star
Oh yeah – and a mega one it is too
Still, KZ3, Resistance 3, LBP2, inFamous 2 says hi o/
SpikeyMikey23
ah, sounds like something i’d enjoy, if i ever get round to playing the gears of war series. im tempted to pick up the assassins creed brotherhood novel
project84music
Was Alan Wake really this year? Seems like an age ago.
I was expecting Fable III from the tag line of the article =P
Charmed_Fanatic
Noble 6 =P
project84music
Haha, I’m guessing this is a mistake I made by having not played either and instead I’m just assuming things from the little I do know about them =P
Erroneus
More love for Alan Wake people! One of the best games of 2010 and people are not playing it :( Brilliant story, brilliant soundtrack, brilliant setting and a fun gameplay, which later on gets more complex and intense.
I’ll take Alan Wake over any of the other games, because it showed some balls and originality. Call of Duty Reach is a fine game, but the Halo series is done. No more Microsoft, no more, unless you really can do a proper reboot.
Thechunkymunky
Call of Duty Reach?! Never seen that one before :P
Dan Lee
Hmmm…well it’s selling for like £10 in places, and if you rate it so highly I might snag a copy.
SpikeyMikey23
Im not a fan of scary/horror/thriller games but the mrs is enjoying it and ive watched her for a bit, seems like a fun game if your into it. Great graphics and voice acting. obviously i cant comment on gameplay.
bunimomike
It’s good but not great. The environment is beautiful. The way the weather effects roll in is mesmerising. However, the facial/mouth animation is truly horrendous and this has a strong narrative. Add repepitive gameplay and it’s worth playing but your undergarments will most certainly remain dry.
Erroneus
I highly recommend it, if you like games with a interesting story and a good scare.
If you are primarily into shooters like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and so on, which focus more on exploding things up, then a complex story, this is not for you :)
This is a game, which really got hurt by being exclusive to the 360, as the Halo / Call of Duty / Gears of War fans, clearly shows no interest in such a game.
bunimomike
It’s definitely worth playing but as the reviews suggest, there’s a few fundamental flaws that hold it back from true greatness.
Rocket_345
Although i do not own an Xbox i have played some of Halo, Alan Wake and Fable 3 around my mates house and i have to say Reach was the best of the 3 that i played.
Has the PS3 one been yet as i think that is going to be extremely close with the likes of God of War 3, Heavy Rain and Modnation Racers in it
DrNate86
Reach is great fun, it made me seriously consider trumping up for a gold account. No PS rankings yet and I suspect modnation won’t do brilliantly but definitely a close call between GOW and Heavy Rain I would have thought!
DRCD1
That’s odd. Halo, in my opinion (and I don’t have an X360, so I probably am dead wrong on what I’ll say here), while it is a damn good FPS, on my book, it’s only above Dance Central (which I never played) on that list. I seriously think that Alan Wake should have won this… it’s an unmatched experience on the Xbox (or anywhere, to be honest). And I only played the tutorial!
bigwhiteyeti
MEH. Alan Wake was far more fun for me than Halo: Reach. It was just more Halo…
