One of the developers of Homefront recently sat down with the folks over at CVG and had a deep discussion about Homefront’s single-player campaign, along with some of Kaos Studio’s inspirations. It seems the guys at Kaos were big fans of the Half-Life series, and we may see that shining through with Homefront. This is what senior single-player designer, Zach Wilson, had to say on the subject.
“Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are definitely the two big influences on the work that we’ve done. Â A lot of first-person shooters don’t just let you walk through the world and appreciate the world. That’s something that Half-Life 2 does really well.
In addition, we looked a lot at the work that John Milius did as an inspiration and we looked a lot at Children Of Men – which was a big inspiration thematically. I’m sure you can see that in parts of the game. We wanted to create a consistent world that is evocative and makes sense.”
Zach also talked about something that has become rather touchy in gaming today – the length of the single-player portion of the game.
“We’ve been play-testing the game and we’ll give the guys doing that the entire day. Â Some of them will get through it in eight hours, some of them will take longer than eight hours. There’s a varying level of challenge depending on the skill of the player. Â We’ve honestly seen players take more than an entire day play through the single-player campaign, sitting down and not doing anything else.”
The Half-Life series is widely regarded to be one of the best in gaming, so it’s great to hear them become so inspired by a series that was so fantastic. As for the length, a window of 8 hours and beyond is right about average for this kind of game, but it’s nice to hear that it becomes a lengthier affair if you’re the exploring type.
Homefront is being published by THQ and will be launching this March on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

I’m already kinda disliking that developer after their douchey Killzone remarks. I’m trying to read what they’re saying but all I can hear is “Waaah, Sony wouldn’t give us bribe money.”
… Not to mention Frontlines.

Somebody is clearly desperate and trying to put focus on a mediocre game, which is clearly is a rip-off of another mediocre game, Modern Warfare 2.

The game doesn’t come out for another month. A bit early to pass judgment, isn’t it?
I remember hearing reports about how sloppy Uncharted was at E3 2007, and even before that, how buggy the original Halo was before launch when people were playing preview-builds.

You are right, I’m a hard judge, but I really dislike Modern Warfare 2 and this seems like a complete ripoff of it.
But i also dislike their weak tries to get attention, like the talk of the second game taking place in UK, because the first game is focused on US and could have troubles selling outside of the US.
I’m not hoping for this to be a bad game, I’m not a fanboy of similar games like BF, COD and so on. I just don’t expect it to be a great game, nothing so far has seemed really impressive.

That reminds me, i’m really looking forward to the next episode in the Half-Life series.
I’ll keep an eye on this to see how it turns out.
