Heavy Rain Creator: “We Own The Genre”

Speaking to SPOnG this week, Heavy Rain creator David Cage has made some rather impressive claims.

“What’s next for you?” he was asked during Wednesday night’s BAFTAs. “Will you continue [to] try [to] push barriers of interactive storytelling or build more bridges in other genres?”

“We created the genre,” Cage replied. “We own the genre.”

Bold claims, Mr Cage.  Are they true?

“We want to show that Heavy Rain was not a coincidence or a lucky shot – that it was really something that makes sense and that we can build on,” he said.

He goes on to say that he is “exploring different directions” and the next game of his will be “very dark, for adults” but “completely different” from Heavy Rain.

Let’s hope the first five minutes of his next game aren’t quite as dull.

  2. I wouldn’t say it was an impressive claim, so much as a true one. Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain are really the only two games in this genre that they themselves created, so yeah.

    • I can remember how Night Trap on Mega CD started out similar (for the time anyway)

      • Dont forget Road Avenger on megaCD too. They hardly created the genre, and correct me if i am wrong but i think dragons lair has been doing it for decades?

        Fair enough there is nothing else like Heavy rain out there at the mo in terms of gameplay and story, but i am interested to see how LA Noire pans out storywise.

        Bold claims indeed but they deserve their success and i cannot wait for the next game

  6. As a great man once said “Great kid, don’t get cocky”.. Also, I think Dragons Lair created the genre, although Fahrenheit, et al did expand on it greatly, so I’ll give him that.

  10. Funny how there’s no more mention anywhere, not from Sony, not from Quantic Dreams about the tons of dlc we were going to get for Heavy Rain…
