PS3 Sales Drop Again

Sales in Japan continue worrying trend: PlayStation 3 needs health, badly.
Published 31/10/2008 at 10:58 by nofi

It’s not good.  Continuing the recent trend, PlayStation 3 sales in Japan have dropped to an all-time low, with under 4,000 units shifted over the last week.  The PS2 sold nearly twice as many, and the PSP topped the charts (no doubt due to the new 3000 model) at over 60,000 units. Bizarrely, the 360 outsold the PS3 by 2:1.  That’ll be those Japanese RPGs, then.

  1. We know there is only one thing which will work, and Sony are on record as saying they won’t do it

Lets hope I haven’t brought the modern day equivalent of the 3DO, Neo Geo

    • I’m getting that feeling

  2. We need LittleBigPlanet bundles like yesterday!

  3. Is the new Final Fantasy going to be a ps3 exclusive? That might sell some….

    • Don’t go there. Just…. don’t….

  4. Lets hope White Knight Chronicles is the cat’s pyjamas then.

  5. Guys it is still selling well every where else in the world. And to think that you may have the new 3DO is just dumb. Like I said in one of last weeks articals it was only selling 8,000 to 9,000 a week a little bit ago. Which wasn’t ground breaking, so for it to drop to 4,000 shouldn’t be that big of a deal. At the momment the 360 has the RPG’s so it is stealing it’s sales. To say oh no it’s dead because it dropped 4,000 a week in Japan is just stupid.

I will agree that it does need to sell more, but it really is in no worse of shape now then it was when it was selling 8,000 a week. It needs it’s RPG’s so it will be interesting to see how it sell’s when those start launching. It has the power to sell well we have already seen that with Dynasty Warriors 6 it jumped way up. So all is not lost just wait for some of these RPG’s to come rolling in.

    • week after week after week after week

when is the corner going to be turned, I’ve been waiting over a year and a half…
and the story is always the same,
theres this next game coming out, oh, not there’s another game coming, out, ‘08 will be the year of the ps3… oh no sorry ‘09 will be the year of the ps3… oh no wait there’s some unannounced titles that will blow your socks off… oh hang on there will 1 rpg coming soon, no wait there will be more in 2010

same old, same old, meanwhile a competitor is moving heaven and earth to make sure it’s customer base isn’t left wanting

oh well there’s always next year, or maybe the year after

I’m not fussed even if another game never came out, I can live off Warhawk for the rest of my life
If i add up the cost of the ps3 (£425) + warhawk / total hours spent in warhawk… It’s working out like a bargain for me

      Did somebody say Warhawk 2.0?

For everybody else they can always live off the promise of tomorrow if they want, but guess what never comes?

      • yeah i got sick of waiting for a reason to hold onto my ps3 and not get a 360.
i think the ps3 is a much better console in terms of its “all-in-one….ness” i.e. with th blu ray player, web browser, etc but when it comes to games the 360 exclusives are currently and look to continue beating the ps3’s.

gears of war, halo3, fable 2, viva pinata, etc appeal to me more than a console whos only 2 exclusives i like is uncharted and resistance.

with the difference in prices (no i dont game online, i havent even got a phone line lol) the 360 was the best option by far.

EDIT: Oh and the fact Fallout3 is alot better on 360 didnt help either. Sorry if any of this sounds fanboyish btw. Ive been a ps3 owner since launch so I assure you its unintentional if it does heh :P

      • bloody hell cc_star, stop being so negative mate…im sure valkrie chronicles will see a surge, as will white knight story… all this doom and gloom is making me depressed…(i know loads of people getting the ps3) i wunna fret man…they WILL follow ;)

      • Well first off all I was saying is the sales in Japan spike now and again for big games. So they will again when any RPG game comes out. Look at the PSP slow sales then some top notch RPG and now it is outselling everything. Second I never said keep waiting all I was saying is it never was selling a lot of consols in Japan so a drop of 4,000 units no big deal. Japan may be selling weak but the rest of the world is strong.

And believe me I am not waiting just because you supposidly do not like any of the games besides Warhawk does not mean the rest of us are not enjoying the other games. MGS4, Uncharted, Motorstorm, GT5P, LBP and soon R2 are excelent games. There are a few other exclusives I have also enjoyed plus all the PSN games and multiplatform games. So I do not see this system going anywhere. And in all honesty what does it mean if it stays in third place. No company is really getting 3rd party exclusives and Sony has some of the best first party developers so the games will still come to the PS3.

    • It’s just a worrying trend, that’s all. Sure, it might not seem too bad right now, but there’s a point where you start to wonder if Sony will pull out of this seeming nosedive.

  6. THERE IS NO NOSEDIVE…believe… :)

  7. Does anyone feel that more people buy 360s because they can be flashed, hence you can then purchase games for something stupid like £2?

    Just a thought thats all.

    • Nonsense. The Dreamcast didn’t even needed a flash to play backups and it flunked. Actually, it did much worse than the PS3 is doing right now. Two things matter: price point and game library. The first will take a while for Sony to have, and the second is coming slower than Sony would like to.

      • You misunderstand me, by flashed i mean chipped, then you can play copy games for £2 pound, or some silly price!

  8. Those pesky japaneese like little gadgets to play with, not big consoles. That’s my excuse anyway.

In my workplace I’m generally known as gadget gamer boy. Last xmas all I had was people asking my advice on what/where/when to buy a Wii. This year it’s ALL about the PS3. No 360 or Wii questions at all. I even had three completely unrelated people asking about the PS3 in the same day last week. When I asked, every one of them said more or less the same thing “we’ve got a new LCD TV so I want to make the most of it”.

PS3 is going to be big this xmas, at least in this corner of Wales anyway.

    • sounds promising.

  9. You hear that? That is the sound of SCE dropping the ball, again.

    • brilliant

  10. I work at Tesco and my big problem is that there are NO press adverts for PS3 and no major price promotions. I have stalled a few people from buying an Xbox by tellin them about Blu Ray and LBP.
I believe that in Australia Sony sold the PS3 as a BluRay player aswell as a console.
Maybe they should try this over here.
We own a genuine jack of all trades machine but Sony seem reluctant to tell people about this.
    Seems weird to me.

    • Jack of all trades…. master of none?

  11. Hey – are you guys forgetting that PS3 sold more then 360 world wide for Q2 of ‘08? Also this week GTA4 and LBP launch on the PS3 in Japan – if it doesn’t sell better this week, that might be time to be concerned?
Finally if you check Amazon sales the PS3 has outpaced the 360 every time I log on… perhaps PS3 people like to have their consoles delivered as opposed to lunking them home from the shop?
Interesting times for sure… But with Pixel Junk trophies to collect, the world is a happy place!!

  12. or download them from the scumbags with the shit TVs and not pay a single penny of your hard-earned.

Except this argument is being used for why the PSP is all but dead (I know sales spiked but it’s a temporary blip, it still hasn’t got much worth playing). Can the same argument really account for the 360 doing well?

While we’re on the subject the Dreamcast is a perfect example, it was the best console of it’s generation but it bombed because it wasn’t advertised properly and didn’t get the developer support. I don’t want to see the PS3 go that way. I tend to think that the Saturn had already killed Sega before they launched the Dreamcast so I’m more concerned for the PS4 than I am for this generation.

  13. Working for GAME mate, I see a very different picture. I see the reality, not marketing promises about whats coming out tomorrow/next month/next year

  14. I enjoyed Uncharted, and absolutely loved MotorStorm… My point is the PS3 is built on future promises?
    I’m not buying it anymore

I know for a fact and I mean FACT the 360 is outselling the PS3 in my town 11:1
    Last week my store sold 7 PS3’s 35 Wii’s, 77 360’s (mainly 60gigs)

These figures are facts, and if you think LBP is gonna make the slightest difference as a system shifter, I’ll tell you how many pre-orders my store has done in total… 14 and I’ll tell you how many it’s done for Gears Of War 2…. 232.
I’m going to work at 11pm on Thursday ready for a midnight opening for the sad b’stards who can’t wait till 9am

If my town is typical of the UK, then someone, somewhere needs to wake up and smell the coffee

But I agree with Michael’s post, it just a worrying trend, but it does need to be turned around

I love my PS3, but it’d be nice if more people did

ps. R2 needs to have a good single player mode, cause mine and many others experience of multiplayer is that it stinks, but then there is always KZ2, oh there I go again with future promises
