French site JV247 is reporting that during an interview at a French video game publisher the site was told, off the record, that Sony almost added backwards compatibility to a recent PS3 firmware update, but changed their mind at the last minute.
However, the site was told that the changes could come in a future update, and if they do add it it’s because Sony want to start selling PS2 games on the PlayStation Store. Interesting news, but naturally take it with a pinch of salt until Sony say otherwise.

I think they should fix the compability rather than giving us an opportunity to buy the games again. I would also like for the FF series from the PSX system to come out on the store first.

Can I? How do I contact them? And if possible, don’t you think someone had done it already?

You mean the PS1, the PSX is an extended PS2… which I’m after… so if your selling, i’ll be buying.

If it’s true and if they charge for a reasonable price, it could be a great revenue maker for Sony. Some PS2 games still look good and play great, I won’t mind coughing some Euro to play the likes of GoW, J-RPGs or some old PS2 shooters.
I have a 60 Gb so backward comp is not a problem, but allowing others to play some PS2 classics is good in my opinion. I only hope they don’t limit the choice to a few crappy games as they did with the PSone games

I think this could be good news even for 60Gb owners, as the current BC isn’t all that amazing – if they’re going to add full software emulation, they might also be fixing some of the bugs in the existing emulation.
I wonder if they’ll still use the hardware chips where they’re available or just go to full software emulation for everyone for more consistency (which would make it easier when people report bugs, etc)

I haven’t got problems, but my PS2 library is pretty limited, I may have been just lucky

Add MGS2 and 3, Resident Evil (Biohazard) 4 and the Grand Theft Auto series.
I bought my PS3 after they nixxed bw compatibility, and finally just bought a PS2 to play my old titles.

If they added backwards compatibility, would this then mean you can play PS2 discs in the console? If so, I’m cracking out GT4 again until 5 is released. Or even better, they could have it to download on the store.

Having downloadable PS2 games on PSN would be great. Not only for convenience since I reckon a lot of older PS2 games are hard to find these days, but perhaps more importantly because a sale through PSN is money straight into Sonys pockets instead of people buying used games.

Now I’m glad that I picked up that cheap 320gb hard drive from Play. I’ve got the release model with backwards compatibility but it would be nice if they included an option to install your old PS2 disk collection onto hard drive as well as games to download..
My Father-in-law is desperate to continue Final Fantasy 12 on his PS3 and is hoping for the firmware update to allow this to happen and to be honest I really don’t see why Sony doesn’t include this.. it would only help with sales even if it’s with more PS2 games, it’s still more choice and variety of software to play.

If he still has a PS2 he may be happier playing it on that. The pre rendered scenes look like poop. I think they are recorded interlaced and that looks when played back on ps2 but not through the emulation on a european ps3. Still I play it on the ps3 and am happy.

I’ve been waiting for this since launch. There are loads of good PS2 titles but then again, there are lots of good PS1 ones that still haven’t appeared on there so I won’t hold my breath

MGS 2 doesn’t even need the second analog stick, except for the sword fighting. Snake Eater doesn’t either, but then, Subsistence (with the good camera) does. :/

I had thought this was on the cards since they announced in Leipzig about issues being resolved to allow hot-swapping of PS2 SingStar discs because they resolved something that allowed the PS3 to read them. It seemed a lot of work to go to for something that (to me) seemed a bit niche.

Mmm… So I have to sell my 60gb launch model quickly before the PS2 compatibility is back on all models

LOL i was thinking the exact same thing (hence the stars) i was considering getting shot of my back comp 60gig for nice cash on ebay (then updating a 40gig to 320gig) and still have money left over..BC is not important to me, and neither are card readers or extra USB (i can use any old comp ones for that)
DONT DO IT SONY! (idiots pay a fortune for 60 giggers)

I’ll be more than a bit pissed off if they get PS2 games on the store yet don’t let you use PS2 disks. That’s an obvious business move, but an immoral one. Don’t let us down on this!

What would be particularly great about this is the chance to buy games from the other region’s stores…
I personally would love the chance to pick up the European version of Ico.

I don’t think Sony will ever put Hardware emulation back in, mainly because of the costs and the costs when the laser breaks down and all the calls to the support centres…

Hmmm, i traded in most of my PS2 games in at game a while ago, i have 2 left, and thats because game was offering under £1 for them, they should really go on eBay with a bunch off PS1 titles.
