If you’re waiting for the new God of War movie which is currently in preproduction, it’s a long wait till you can get a non-consle iteration of Kratos but fear not mortal because Matthew Stover has you covered. He’s penning a novelization of the PS2 original which should be released alongside the third game.

“In the novel GOD OF WAR, Kratos, the game’s protagonist, is a great warrior who seeks revenge on the God of War Ares for the deaths of his wife and child. On his journey to Olympus, Kratos must battle great monsters of legend–and fight his own inner demons.” So basically it’s the first game in text form.

If it sounds good to you, you can pre-order it here.

  1. sounds interesting. wonder if my local library will have this??

  2. I missed out on GoW 1 and 2 :(

    • I did too, you’ll just have to pick up on it all at GOW 3, i plan on :)

  3. Hmmm, should i play the first game to make up for missing the first 2 games and prepare myself for the third installment? Or, should i just read the novel, play the second game, then get the third?

    • No. Play them all.
The first is the best in my opinion.

      • Alrite, cool. I’ll have a good scan next time i’m in any games retailers, think i’ve seen it second hand in Gamestation before.

      • I agree with Lorcan; definitely play them all as the series is very story-centric and the third leads on from a cliffhanger in GoW2. I also agree that the first is the best, although I expect four years down the line its impact will have been significantly diminished.

Intrigued by the novel, although I hope it’s not written in a juvenile style. Might check it out to sate my curiousity, although I doubt it will really be up to much.

  4. I recently bought both God of War 1 and 2, but interesting project.

  5. Could be good, but would you be able to get the violence across like that in writing?

    • if your a good writer then im sure you could

    • Absolutely. The freedom to describe in detail add more depth to things than most other types of media. Get a good writer and these could potentially be amazing

    • Never read any Bernard Cornwell, eh?

      • Never even heard of him :|

  6. Sounds like a fun book to read :D

  7. Pre-ordered. Thanks for that. I absolutely love the story of GOW. I’m a bit of a fan of ancient Greek mythology so to see them getting the majority of the relations, links and monsters into the game was brilliant.

I would go so far as to say that it is my favourite story of any game. You do get truly lost in the world and characters. Don’t be fooled by the gore and action, it outdoes some film and tv in terms of plot and emotion. Partly because the woman who voices Gaia and narrates throughout has an amazing storytelling voice.

The extra cutscenes that are unlocked after completion of the first game are true extras too. They reveal extra insights and teasers which do set the imagination alight (well for me anyway). My favourite being………oops better not spoil it for those who have not played.

Speaking of those who have not played; DO IT!! I can not stress how much of a great game and experience it is. It is Sony’s greatest exclusive franchise in my eyes.

I’m very dubious about the film which is down to a lack of faith in Hollywood adaptations more than anything, but as an avid reader, the novels excite me. Books are the other medium that can convey the story and it’s emotions with success in my opinion.

Bring on the novels and bring on GOW3!!

    Over and out!

  8. Looks pretty good to me.

  9. not much of a reader but might give them a try, specially if there is an audiobook spoken by kratos!! how awesome would thet be

  10. I tipped this in the forums and in the comments on the God of War movie, but forget it, what a tagline! (Or whatever you call the bit that shows up on the front page) I have to get this for my Granny, then use that tagline as justification!

    • Not all of the writers get the news tips. We can only credit you and give you points if you were the source of the info, otherwise it wouldn’t be fair.
I want an MP3 of your granny reading the first chapter when this comes out…

      • Ok, that’s fair enough.
Perhaps a better MP3 would be my parents reaction when they hear what I bought Granny…

  11. Talk about milking the GOW cash cow! Though I suppose this kind of thing has been done for years with the Star Wars, Doctor Who, Buffy books etc.

  12. Interesting, I have been wanting something to read for a while… Could this be what I was looking for??? :P

  13. Sounds interesting, I’m Reading the Resistance book the now and quite enjoying it.

  14. And my apologies to Lorcan, Colossalblue and any other members of the TSA staff who may or may not be offended/ annoyed at that comment.

  15. Why would we be annoyed?
    You were nice and complimentary!
