You’ll remember back in September we said that, as far as we knew, cross game chat had been intended to be one of the main bulletpoints in the PS3’s Firmware 3.00 update but for whatever reason didn’t quite make it out, with the much requested XMB-based communication tool pushed back for 3.10. Well, today one of the Naughty Dog team appears to have confirmed what we’d heard, albeit rather briefly.
The post on the official PlayStation forums has been removed, but the team member who apparently is part of the team responsible for Uncharted 2 said, in reference to dead players speaking to each other, that “the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat.” Clear as day, then. “So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies positions.”
Or sneakily inform the opposite team of their tactics – ooh, see, cross game chat can be bad.

TSA always grab the news first! This will finally stop people complaining, but TBH im not that bothered with cross game chat.

It won’t stop me from complaining, but not because I want the feature so bad, it’s actually because I don’t care for it. People talk so much about how nobody uses mics on PS3. Well, when we finally get cross game chat, say goodbye to any team communication we have left. I can only imagine being the assassination target in Killzone 2, but I can’t ask my squad for help because they’re all chatting with friends who aren’t even playing Killzone. I bet all the money in the bank that if the other system didn’t already have it, nobody would be saying a word.

I know a lot of people have been after this, but it’s not something that I’m particularly bothered about. To me, it’s much more important to have a ‘working’ in-game chat facility.
And, as the article says, it ‘could’ be mis-used!!!

Naughty (see what I did?) tactics in Call of Duty Search and Destroy when you spectate and shout where the enemies are.
Better than having to send messages though

Didn’t TSA say before that only the game dev’s can implement it into their game or something. So we could find it works with some games, but not others while online??? Might of misheard.

I don’t think so, that would be completely useless though as no-one would do it for a while.
I think it was some guy saying he was from sony and it was because EA games weren’t working with it so they had to get devs to implement it themselves.

The full post is;
“I think they wanted people to have fun and ejoy the show since all dead players can talk to each other no matter what team you are on. But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies positions.”
Its looking very likely, I cant wait. This is the feature me and many of my friends have been waiting for!

not bothered with cross game chat at all, would much rather sony focused their time on the update for listening to your own music while playing a game!

*sigh* we have had that feature since July of 2008, and I still see people all over the net telling Sony to get on it. It’s a game to game basis. The PS3 itself has been capable of it for over a year. If it isn’t programmed in the game, it won’t work, and obviously Sony doesn’t make every game on PS3.

I think that it’s a patent thing, that’s why they can’t do it for the whole system as Microsoft has.

Some people may think that this is an unneeded feature but, in my experience with the sluggish (but still extremely helpful) text chat when trying to cooperate with other players, be it for a Trophy or just communicating with a friend playing a single player game, actual voice chat would be a sort of godsend.
Think about it too, I get horrible service on my cell. So I use the PS3 voice chat which is connected through my internet and it doesn’t cost me anything to use.
I’m excited for the feature and I can’t wait for it to come out.
I also can’t wait to see how Sony is going to use those horrid boxes around our names. It still hasn’t grown on me…

Cross Game Chat…I thought we already had that. As when i am playing on my PS3 and need a drink i just shout to my wife on the pc in the other room and she gets it…Cross Gaming Chat. lol Joking aside ii think really this is only an issue because its on the 360 not PS3.

I really, REALLY, hope this is true. For me, cross game chat is one of the only things left keeping PSN behind XBL. Me and my friend still boot up our 360’s, start a private chat, then switch HDMI port to play PS3 games. It’s just nice to talk to friends sometimes, without having to enter a multiplayer game. FINGERS CROSSED!

Well, I’m for the cross-game chat future even when I will not use it that much I think..
But I do hope they make more changes to the whole chat/message system.
- notifications form messages sent while I was offline, just put the icon in the notification area.
- when sent a chat invite, let us leave the chat window while waiting for the invitee to answer.

Here’s hoping this can be used to replace the completely broken in-game comms on a load of titles (EA Games, I’m looking at you!). I appreciate that it works for some people, but I’ve never managed to have a chat with people while playing TW ‘09 or ‘10.
