Feeling left out at all the talk of Netflix on PS3 today? Well, don’t worry, the European launch of the PlayStation Network video delivery service is just around the corner. Launching this November (in France, Germany, Spain and the UK) we’re told the service will allow movie fans to download the latest releases (screenshot below) straight to your PlayStation 3s and PSPs for viewing at home or on the go.

The video delivery service will offer high quality entertainment, available to buy or to rent, from major movie studios including 20th Century Fox, Disney-ABC-ESPN Television1, Lionsgate2, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Starz Media2, Universal2, and Warner Bros. in addition to local markets studios which will be announced closer to launch, in addition to local market studios.
Other markets will follow in 2010.

Depends what they put up on this – if there is no TV shows I doubt I’ll use it often.
Be nice to have some new movies in high quality though – but will it be high def? We’ll have to wait and see.

Looking forward to this. However one thing that concerns me is the size of HD films. We must be talking over 10GB which means I can’t get them off my PS3. I wouldn’t want to pay as much for a film that I can only play on 1 device. Although I’m sure I remember something in a recent firmware update about playing multiple files in succession. So maybe they split anything that’s over 4GB.

the ps3 has been able to play sequential videos for a few updates now, shame the 360 still cant.
there is a back up option for videos downloaded off the video store, i assume that should still work for eu films when we get them, would be handy as i’ve got a 1tb drive that works with my ps3 that could hold a hell of a lot of content

That does help. Still means only 1 device though. If I can get the bluray for the same price I’d have to go with that.

i would imagine it would be cheaper than bluray.
but for films i’d prefer disc to download, would be more inclined to download tv shows.

is this just the news from gamescom or has there been a more recent announcement.
because i recall a number of other announcements over the last couple of years for features that were due to come to europe and then scee never ever mentioned them again.

I think this will be one of those services where if I have the credit on my account and no good PSN games are on the horizon I may treat myself.
Most people don’t realise that of course going to rental stores is cheaper, but convenience is where this service will get most of it’s sales. If something is easily accessible and within the boundaries of a “decent”(define that as you will) price range, people will flock to it.
No idea of a specific region of next month nofi?

Two words, well one actually – LoveFilm
You don’t have to leave your house to receive unlimited rentals for less than a tenner a month
Unlimited rentals £9.78 (1 at a time)
Unlimited rentals £12.78 (2 at a time)
Unlimited rentals £15.65 (3 at a time)
This includes Blu-rays and games, there is not a chance in hell that Sony’s service will allow you to rent movies for that little.

Have to wait at least a day or two though. No good if I want one now, unless they significantly expand the streaming catalogue.

Wow. That is BRILLIANT.
I have seen LoveFilm talked about a lot on TSA, but have never actually got around to taking a look at their website and checking them out. £9.78!
Free postage?

Use this code for LoveFilm MT3AMZ and get a 30 day trial & £10 Amazon voucher.
The downside is there maybe another postal strike on Thu/Fri.

I think the service is long overdue but as mentioned many times is of limited use to many people, I have Sky and I have a membership to Lovefilm which means I pretty much always have at least two disks in the house. If I get stuck of an evening though then this will be a good alternative to whatever is on Sky.

Great first I was in a corner of my room rocking back & forth waiting for MW2, now I have to wait for this fantastic feature too. Oh November, you will actually drive me mad!

I think this is a great idea and welcome it. I don’t know if I will use it much but may now and then. I’m with LoveFilm so I’ll stick with it coz then my gf gets to watch stuff too, but maybe when I have a night in by myself I might use it sometime for something she doesn’t wanna see.

This is excellent. I never buy DVDs of films because I’ll watch them maybe once or twice and never touch them again and they just take up shelf space. Now I can rent films straight to my PS3 in high quality and it’s probably cheaper than Blockbuster too!

Looking forward to this – why wander up to Blockbuster when you can click?

Looking forward to trying this service out, depending on the pricing of course!! I can see me using the rental part the most though, mainly impulse decisions when I get home at night and there’s nothing I fancy watching no TV!!

More bandwidth scarfed up! Where is all the extra space going to come from? I can it’s important for people like Sony to test the waters but from a user POV with my bandwidth regularly bouncing from .5 to 5. I can imagine it being a pretty frustrating affair unless you’re on a 20MB cable line.

I bet you that people that have the repaired PS3’s wont be able to access this, just like the TV icon…
