Acivision have revealed the day-one sales figures of Modern Warfare 2; and they’re huge. If their internal estimates are correct, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has raked in over $300 million (approx. £185 million) in just a single day. This isn’t even worldwide figures either; this is purely based on the US and UK sales. If these numbers are to be believed, then it has become the biggest entertainment release of all time.

So that’s the monetary value, but what does that actually mean in terms of units sold? 4.7 million according Activision; smashing the previous one-day record set by GTA IV, by over 85%. CEO of Activision said:

The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium

There has been a bit of confusion over the day-one figures of Modern Warfare 2, however. Chart-Track – the company behind the official UK games chart and sales figures – has come under attack from everyone’s favourite analyst – Michael Pachter. Chart-Track has released data that suggests the number of units shifted on the first day, in the UK alone, were 1.23 million. Pachter has questioned these figures as he believes, based on other predictions by other analysts, that they are too high. Chart-Track has defended their release by stating:

UK retailers have been at the forefront of electronic data capture for decades, which in turn allows us to capture daily sales from 99 per cent of retailers on our panel.

If both Chart-Track and Activision’s figures are accurate, then it means (i’m hoping my math is correct here) that the UK accounts for over 25% of the 4.7 million units sold on day one.

Whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit; Modern Warfare 2 has become a historical release.

  1. Does it deserve to sell well..? Yes.. Does it deserve these record sales..? No.
It’s a good game, but it’s not the best game of all time by any means whatsoever.

    • Not at all, UC2 beats MW2 SP by miles. SP in MW2 is so god damn scripted and artificial. Sure the MP is great, but really they could have make a PSN/XBL title…

      • i must say my beef with the game was 50 quid & the short singleplayer but after getting it for 26 quid i am really enjoying the singleplayer part as well as online i eat my words on this game very very good but GTA is better

    • It does deserve record sales, because despit the fact its not the greatest game ever, it is the greatest online game ever IMO and the opinion of millions of others, nuff said

  2. puts that million dollar donation in perspective doesn’t it?

    • Ha too right, not forgetting the DLC that will inevitably come as well and the amount they will make from that alone.

      • I am making a point not to buy any of the map packs for world at war just for the sole reason that i see them as a rip off! Stick em all in a bundle that works out as £2-3 each then I will consider it!

    • thats the 1st thing i thought when i seen the title…good will my arse! lol

  3. The game is awesome – I give my life to it… see you again in two years, bye!

(Multiplayer, and co-op special ops – not a fan of the single player)

    • I agree 100%. I’ve taken a whole week off of work just to play this game. The MP and special ops are downright awesome. I wish they wouldn’t show how long you’ve played the game, sometimes i wonder how much more productive i could’ve been doing something else……bah who am I kidding, i’m proud of my 33+ days spent playing COD4, heres to another months worth of MW2

  4. ho-hum, higher RRP as standard here we come.

    • Higher RRP yet lowest release price here we come (hopefully).

I paid £26 on the morning of release at Sainsbury. No queues either, beautiful.

      • same here then went in to game & rubbed there noses in it for ripping me of for years only after i got a preowned title i was like guess how much i got mw2 for lol

      • It’s going to backfire. The higher RRP could have heard it sales, but then some shops decided to crazy with their prices on the game. So what’s stopping Activision from upping the RRP even further now >_<

      • that was my point from the start with this game

  5. Honestly after playing Uncharted 2 and Demon Souls I only bought Modern Warfare 2 because I had it on pre order, went to the midnight launch party, dealt with a bunch of idiots who were arguing that my PS3 version of the game was gay.

Got home, poped it, started a campagin on vetreran, no trophies 4 levels in.

At this point I am like WTF? So I spend 2 hours online till I find a solution, delete the god damn patch they released and restart that campagin, play another two hours and was getting trophies again.

With ALL that BS, I must say even though this game is not as graphically superior as an console exclusive, this game has an really deep story that suprised me (compared to any other call of duty game you wouldent expect this either), the best gun play I have seen since COD4, AMAZING Multiplayer (IMO), but most of all the game tugged on my heart strings and made me feel (not going to spoil anything).

Uncharted 2 may be my game of the year but this game honestly follows very closely for some refreshing reasons, I recommend that if you ever had any liking what so ever to FPS’ to definitely play this game.

  6. If the PSN microcosm that is my friends list is any indication, I can believe those figures are probably correct.

    • Haha. That’s true, I logged in on release day and every single friend that was online was plaing MW2 (interesting to see what missions / multiplayer map and mode they were on too)

  7. Amazing figures. Didnt deserve them though because of all the bugs and online problems.

  8. Cant say Im surprised..  I wonder how many people were boycotting the game, only to flip at the last minute due to supermarket price wars?  Me at least.. :)

    • I was happy to wait til the new year for it but then pulled out afew favours to get me to Sainsburys at opening time on release day.

The price was way to good to refuse for such a great game.

    • The price defeated me as well, but I hate supermarkets as well so not a complete loss.

    • Yep im gulity as charged to and boy do i feel ashamed for caving in . Even felt a bit superior as i saw other people poping into any other store to buy it as i walked shiftly along to sainsburys trying hard not to display the huge saving im about to save.. Ive convinced myself its a investment anyway,as soon as ive completed it the weekend im off to trade it in at cex to get some much more neededgames in my life

  9. 4.7 Million people have in most cases just parted with some serious cash for a multiplayer game. Nearly everyone i speak to passes on the single player and goes straight to the multiplayer.

BFBC2 for me, you can keep your COD.

    • Just thought i hope this doesn’t justify a price increase to future games for other game publishers developers!

  10. Surprised it wasn’t more, what with the £55 price tag.

    Although… supermarkets and all that…

    • that shouldn’t affect how much activision make, they’ll still get paid the same.
unless the supermarkets got a better deal on it than other shops, i know they do with everyday goods, don’t know if they have the leverage to do the same in the games market though.

  11. guess bobby will be getting his new yacht then.

  12. 25% of worldwide sales in the UK

Thankyou Sainsbury’s for proving that gamers will buy games in quantity if the are a) good b) correctly priced

The supermarkets have sent publishers the biggest possible lesson.

£55, £45, £35 hell even £30 RRPs are all out of the window

The only thing that will spoil it is all the muppets (parents of 13 year olds) paying £50 in GAME between now and Christmas

    • Would love to see how many people brought it at each price point.

  13. And I cant even play the bloody thing as my ps3 has now decided to pack up with COD in it.
So thats no ps3, no cod, and a 128quid replacement cost whilst im saving up to drive?
    Fantastic.

  14. One of the problems i have with the game is just how stale it is. With a company like naughty dog you can feel the ‘love’ they put in their games put this is all about the money
And you can tell its all about the money just from looking at the booklet in the box. just look at how cheap it is. Although i really wanted to hate this game I’m still going to run through the single player tomorrow

  15. Wow, those are some phenominal figures. It was a given that MW2 was going to sell extremely well, but those numbers are amazing.
