In the video area of the PSN Store on PS3 there will be 800 films at launch. Some will be just to buy, some just HD and some just SD.  Release dates will be the same as in the shops.

Of those 800 films, 125 will be available in HD.  The plan is to release 50 film movies onto the store each week.  As time goes on those new titles will replace the less popular ones.  You will be able to search the store by studio as well as finding the films grouped in collections, such as finding all the X-Men films together.

For those of you interested in knowing the size of the downloads one example given is the HD version of the film 300 which will be 6.6GB in size.

  1. Nice! I was thinking of like max 10 films and only 2 of them being HD – Nice one SCEE!

    • Agreed, Every figure i have read so far i am pleasantly surprised about.
That 6.6gb looks a little worry-some though, Good thing i just plan on rentals.
Hope every film comes with a trailer too.
Provided the service launches smoothly with few or no bugs at all, SCEE will have earned a few brownie points here!

      • I’m actually relieved by the size. The quality should be pretty good with that amount of data.

  2. Wow! 6.6gig. I’d be surprised if people bought these rather than renting. I mean that’s a sizeable amount especially if you’ve got one of the original PS3. Still 800 films at launch. Pretty impressive.

  3. I must admit I am quite pleasently surprised by what I am reading about this so far.

    • Me too. Great stuff.

      • This is great news, with the pricing too,…….REALLY happy about this :)

    • Same. I was really hoping the Video Store would be good but it looks even better than I thought. :D

  4. 50 films a week?

Just wait till they keep to that… with about 3 a week.
Maybe 50 TV episodes, but films is stretching it a bit.

    • Films only at the moment. No TV.

    • They will put lots of old films on in SD for a few months, especially over the xmas period to keep the parents happy with little jimmys slim new toy. Then after about 4 months, they will start replacing the stuff no one watches with HD versions of new films.

  5. Any idea on pricing of renting HD movies?

    • I’d say about £3.49 ish. TSA just covered this, go take a look. ;)

    • From another story here at TSA :
First word on pricing of videos has just arrived back from our roving reporters. Movie rentals will start at £2.49 while it will cost as much as £11.99 to buy a brand new film.  An example given was the recent Watchmen film which will cost:
      HD rental – £3.49
      SD rental – £2.99
      Buy SD – £8.99

  6. the only figure I’m not happy about is the file size, no problem for my new 500GB I got for £40 though!

    • I got 320GB for £40! Amazon, good spec. Where did you get that drive then and what make?

    • I need to get a bigger hard drive for my slim!

  7. 50 releases a week? Thats insane!

  8. That is amazing. I need to get a bigger hard drive for my ps3 :D

  9. this is fantastic :)

  10. If you rent a film, how long do you keep it for?
My internet is so slow, by the time it fully downloads it will have expired!

    • From what I read you have 14 days to watch it, with 48 hours to finish watching once you start. Presumably the 14 day period starts once you’ve finished downloading. I worry about my internet speeds too but the video that’s on another article promises you can start watching a couple of minutes after download starts (this presumably applies to SD films): otherwise I’ll need to work out what I want to watch about 2 days in advance!

I’m impressed by the range and the pricing of this service, so as long as it works without a hitch I’ll be chucking quite a bit of money Sony’s way.

  11. Blimey, much much better than I was expecting. Never thought I’d be saying this but good for SCEE

  12. hey! 800! hey!
    lucky i picked up a 500GB HDD!

  13. Does anyone how this will be displayed status wise, ie will it say “watching a film”, or just remain blank. Just curious that’s all. :)

  14. Whoah man! That is a lot. I was predicting twenty titles max. Very impressed.

  15. Mmm Hake ‘n’ Chips… Mmmm Cottage Pie… Mmmm..errr..yukyukyukyuk Pumpkin Ravioli!
