April 2010 sees the rebirth of Capcom classic ‘Final Fight’ as a PSN or XBLA download. The new version will be called ‘Final Fight Double Impact’ and will come packaged with another side scrolling brawler, ‘Magic Sword’, in which you play ‘The Brave One’ (note: not Jodie Foster) and battle the evil forces of Drokmar.

Both games will support either a crisp new HD mode or you can play with the original graphics. They will also have a drop-in online co-op mode and online leader boards.

Final Fight started life as an arcade game in 1989 in which the trio of heroes, Cody, Guy and Haggar battled against the ‘Mad Gear’ gang to rescue the Mayors daughter, Jessica. Haggar is the ex-pro wrestling Mayor, Cody specialised in martial arts and Guy was a Bushin ninja. Quite why Japanese fighting games insist on naming their super hard ninjas “Guy” or “Ken” is beyond me…

“I am Katanga Blade! Ninja Master of the Four Sword discipline, slayer of dragons and lover of a thousand women! Who dare challenges me?”

“Hi.. I’m Bob. Bob the Kung Fu expert.”

Metro City bad guys included Axl & Slash, named after the Guns ‘n’ Roses stars, Holly Wood and.. er.. Sodom.  The Japanese version also featured Poison and Roxy who were a pair of she-males who specialised fighting in high heels. The pair vanished from the western version of the game and were replaced by generic punk boys, Billy and Sid.

I wonder if I can get a gratuitous picture of Haggar in without Nofi checking…

  1. Best news of the week!!!

Capcom are really bracing digital distribution as a way of giving people a chance to re-play their back catalogue, just waiting on EA to do the same, err Road Rash first please.

    • Second that re: FF and RR.

    • Road Rash is a must, and after playing the RCracing demo i think Micromachines would be a good addition. i remember pluging extra pads in the cartridge to gain 3 or 4 players! great game! anyone know who made it?

      • Pretty sure it was Codemasters..

      • Yup was the Codies.

      • sweet…ill drop them an email.lol

      • Codies had loads of ace games, I would love to see some converted to PS3.
I should look in the loft, They will all be there (My old 464 CPC+ cassettes)

    • You know all three road rash games are available on the EA collection on PSN?

      • Yup but only for psp. A release for ps3 would be great!

    • Road Rash, Brings back good memories, I remember visiting my friend to play this, Good times, An awesome title.

  2. You sure about the Poison and Roxy thing, I’m sure I remember getting beaten up by ladies (in the game)? – Never realized they were she-males.
Actually maybe its cos I played it on MacMame a few years back, might of downloaded a japanese version.

    • I can remember fighting Billy & Sid on the Amiga version, but there were generic lady characters to kick as well.

  3. They are also bringing back Magic Sword to XBLA and PSN, too

    • Yup. The article says that :P

      • It was supposed to have a question mark on the end!

      • Sure

  4. Oooh yeeeeahh baby.

It seems more classics are coming through – I wonder if they’re thinking about streets of rage?

Or even better – Kung Fu master!!!!

    • You can play streets of rage on the sega megadrive collection i think.I rather play double dragon anyway.

  5. Wicked, this was an all time favourite of mine. Best news for ages.

  6. I’m not a huge fan of Beat Em Ups but Final Fight was great, it felt much “heavier” than usual BEUs. An featured Haggar. Woof woof.

  7. Great news!! I remember playing this on the super nintendo. Great game!

  8. We dont need that..

  9. I cannot wait for this to come out on the psn. Many hours and 10 pence pieces were spent on this in the arcades.
Does any one remember the Japanese virsion? Europe’s was cut, but if u downloaded the jap version the intro cut scene was different. As it shown Cody’s girlfirend in her Bra pleading for help haha.

  10. If it’s true that the graphics aren’t going to be redrawn but just “touched up” Sega style then this release sounds like a bit of a waste of time to me. As for including Magic Sword… what? Why not just include Final Fight 2 or something? That would at least make sense.

  11. I always wanted to play this but never have. I have played Streets of Rage but that is quite tedious and repetitive, especially on your own. I hear this is much better though and it seems a lot better too.

  12. This was a good game back in the day and probably a favourite not that I have ever been much into beat em up’s. The game I am waiting for though retro-wise is Alien Breed and that is due out soon.

  13. I sunk a heap of coin into this one in the arcarde. I will defo be picking it up

    • One of 2 arcade games I’ve finished, the other being SFII

This one cost me £1.10 in continues
