After the series’ divisive sixth mainline instalment, Capcom took a breather before returning to its survival horror roots in Resident Evil 7. Although far from perfect (the final act lets it down) this marked a positive change in direction for one of gaming’s most beloved franchises. Here’s what we said in our Resident Evil 7 review.

For them to successfully steer one of their flagships back on track, Capcom has done what many thought was unthinkable. It was less than twelve months ago that the publisher released Umbrella Corps, at which point I – and no doubt many others – were ready to call time on the series. Resident Evil 7 definitely has a handful of weak points, but it’s by far the best AAA survival horror game we’ve seen in quite some time.

What’s new in the world of Resident Evil? Capcom just revealed a new expansion – Shadows of Rose – for RE8 that includes new story content as well as a third person mode and a playable Lady Dimitrescu. We also learned that the multiplayer-focused Re:Verse will be launching in October with a Resident Evil 4 remake also in the pipeline for 2023.
