The official UK Christmas Number 1 for 2009 is…Modern Warfare 2. Oh come on, you could act a little surprised! Activision and Infinity Ward’s latest Call of Duty game has held strong at number 1 since its release 6 weeks ago, but they have a long way to go to beat EA’s record of 11 Christmas Number 1’s. So, what has been happening elsewhere on the charts?
UK PS3 Chart: Week ending 19th December:
Modern Warfare 2 has reclaimed the top spot on the PS3 chart having lost out to Assassin’s Creed 2 last week. Uncharted climbs one place to number 4 meaning that Drake has been in the top 5 ever since release, some 2 months ago. Avatar: The Game enters the chart for the first time since release; it climbed 7 places to number 6. And, if Activision weren’t happy enough with Modern Warfare 2’s performance, Modern Warfare 1 has also climbed back into the charts…I’m thinking that there may have been some confused parents out there this week and that a few of you may be disappointed when you open an old game!

UK 360 Chart: Week ending 19th December:
Modern Warfare 2 has sat at number 1 on the 360 chart since release and it’s still there. Again, Avatar: The Game has arrived from number 18 to number 7; must be to do with the release of the film. FIFA 10 has climbed into the top 3 again and WWE SvR 2010 has slipped from the chart entirely; although it had been a prominent feature for several weeks before.

The Chart Competition winners will be announced as soon as I have sorted through the entries.

Glad to see someone else realises that retailer discounting causes ‘blips’ in the charts

In it’s 1st week of release Play had Avatar as £17.95 as part of a deal of the day promotion so it has been cheaper even in the 1st week, admittedly though the reduction is more widespread this week.

I find it sad. I prevented a parent from buying Starcraft 1 the other day, when I was out shopping. A women asked the clerk in a Gamestop for Starcraft 2 (yeah… ) and the clerk looked it up and found Starcraft 1, which he tried to sell the poor woman. Now the clerk didn’t do it because he was an arse, he was simply stressed and clearly knew nothing about games.

Ouch… It would be something like:
Son: Yay I got the new Call o… what the hell, this is a old game, I asked for the second game
Father: But this is the fourth, it’s even better than the second
Son: *starts crying*

I suspect a big part of MW1’s resurgence is due to it’s inclusion in PS3 bundles by many retailers. Whether that’s a result of the retailers trying to take advantage of consumer confusion or a reaction to MW2’s relatively high retail price I wouldn’t like to say.

Was in Asda on the weekend and overheard:
Father “Which one you having again?”
Son “Modern Warfare 2″
Father “Ah, right”
Me “You know that’s for grown-ups and there’s some pretty serious content in there.”
Father “He’ll be alright. It’s only a video game and GTA didn’t seem to bother him”.
Me {dies a little inside}

You should have said: “You know that’s for grown-ups and there’s some pretty serious content in there?……….Plus it’s shit!”

Yep, being #4 for 6 months is better than being #1 for a fortnight and disappearing altogether

Definitely, and it’s against some pretty strong competition too…
Also good to see that Batman’s still chilling in the top 10

Pretty obvious how this was going to turn out. Unlike the singles charts for Christmas no.1.

I didn’t know how this would turn out actually. The obvious one was Modern Warfare 2 and if I had to guess it would have been that one, but FIFA always seems to get a big sales jump during Christmas week. Assassin’s Creed 2 had done well on the PS3 chart last week, so I was thinking maybe it could go top of the 360 chart too this week and clinch the #1. It was a toss-up really.
The charts are odd this year. Usually everyone knows that the X-Factor winner will get #1 in the singles chart and they didn’t this year, but people don’t usually know what will get #1 in the games chart (besides FIFA, which usually gets it I think, but it could still be a different game) and it was clear to a lot of people this year.
