The official UK Christmas Number 1 for 2009 is…Modern Warfare 2. Oh come on, you could act a little surprised! Activision and Infinity Ward’s latest Call of Duty game has held strong at number 1 since its release 6 weeks ago, but they have a long way to go to beat EA’s record of 11 Christmas Number 1’s. So, what has been happening elsewhere on the charts?

UK PS3 Chart: Week ending 19th December:

Modern Warfare 2 has reclaimed the top spot on the PS3 chart having lost out to Assassin’s Creed 2 last week. Uncharted climbs one place to number 4 meaning that Drake has been in the top 5 ever since release, some 2 months ago. Avatar: The Game enters the chart for the first time since release; it climbed 7 places to number 6. And, if Activision weren’t happy enough with Modern Warfare 2’s performance, Modern Warfare 1 has also climbed back into the charts…I’m thinking that there may have been some confused parents out there this week and that a few of you may be disappointed when you open an old game!

UK 360 Chart: Week ending 19th December:

Modern Warfare 2 has sat at number 1 on the 360 chart since release and it’s still there. Again, Avatar: The Game has arrived from number 18 to number 7; must be to do with the release of the film. FIFA 10 has climbed into the top 3 again and WWE SvR 2010 has slipped from the chart entirely; although it had been a prominent feature for several weeks before.

The Chart Competition winners will be announced as soon as I have sorted through the entries.

  1. Avatar will be due to the price dropping to about £25 everywhere.

    • Glad to see someone else realises that retailer discounting causes ‘blips’ in the charts

      • I noticed too.

    • In it’s 1st week of release Play had Avatar as £17.95 as part of a deal of the day promotion so it has been cheaper even in the 1st week, admittedly though the reduction is more widespread this week.

  2. MW1 back in the PS3 charts = Confused parents. I like the thought and it made me chuckle. Thank you.

    • I find it sad. I prevented a parent from buying Starcraft 1 the other day, when I was out shopping. A women asked the clerk in a Gamestop for Starcraft 2 (yeah… ) and the clerk looked it up and found Starcraft 1, which he tried to sell the poor woman. Now the clerk didn’t do it because he was an arse, he was simply stressed and clearly knew nothing about games.

    • Imagine being the kid though unwrapping it and finding a 2 year old game.

      • Gutted. and chances are the same game is upstairs collecting dust for the 9 months

      • Ouch… It would be something like:
Son: Yay I got the new Call o… what the hell, this is a old game, I asked for the second game
Father: But this is the fourth, it’s even better than the second
        Son: *starts crying*

    • I suspect a big part of MW1’s resurgence is due to it’s inclusion in PS3 bundles by many retailers. Whether that’s a result of the retailers trying to take advantage of consumer confusion or a reaction to MW2’s relatively high retail price I wouldn’t like to say.

      • Lots of people may of picked up the old one as they have been playing the new one, and wanted more story.lol.

most likely parents getting the wrong thing tho

  3. Was in Asda on the weekend and overheard:

Father “Which one you having again?”
    Son “Modern Warfare 2″
    Father “Ah, right”
Me “You know that’s for grown-ups and there’s some pretty serious content in there.”
Father “He’ll be alright. It’s only a video game and GTA didn’t seem to bother him”.
    Me {dies a little inside}

    • You should have said: “You know that’s for grown-ups and there’s some pretty serious content in there?……….Plus it’s shit!”

      :D

      • HAHAH :D

You should of also told him… ” i hope your boy LOVES spending every second of his free time on the PSN, otherwise he is going to get virtually raped every time he logs on by light machine gun fire, shot by lifeless greasy nerds constantly…zzzz boring! lol

  4. Glad to see Uc2 going up, after all, it is VGA’s and TSA’s GotY

  5. one week for ac2 then.

  6. Good to see UC2 still selling consistently well…I just can’t get enough of the MP at the moment!!! ;)

    • Yep, being #4 for 6 months is better than being #1 for a fortnight and disappearing altogether

    • Definitely, and it’s against some pretty strong competition too…

Also good to see that Batman’s still chilling in the top 10

  7. Anyone get their predictions correct? I can’t remember what mine were.

    • I did! I predicted that MW2 would be top, but that is the only one that I got correct.

  8. Well some idiot tried to sell my Uncharted Drakes Fortune the other day, good thing i didnt send my grandma. My cousin has wanted it for ages. I brought it to the counter and he went “oh that one doesnt seem to be on offer let me get you another one” then he got uc df and tried to sell that to me :@ I went somewhere else for uc2 in the end :D

  9. my mum rang me the other day when she was in game asking what game it was that my bro wanted… she goes is it that modernwarfare I go make sure you get moderwarfare 2 she goes oo so where is that one… she had the first in her hand i laughed at her.

  10. Pretty obvious how this was going to turn out. Unlike the singles charts for Christmas no.1.

  11. I didn’t know how this would turn out actually. The obvious one was Modern Warfare 2 and if I had to guess it would have been that one, but FIFA always seems to get a big sales jump during Christmas week. Assassin’s Creed 2 had done well on the PS3 chart last week, so I was thinking maybe it could go top of the 360 chart too this week and clinch the #1. It was a toss-up really.

The charts are odd this year. Usually everyone knows that the X-Factor winner will get #1 in the singles chart and they didn’t this year, but people don’t usually know what will get #1 in the games chart (besides FIFA, which usually gets it I think, but it could still be a different game) and it was clear to a lot of people this year.

  12. Next year I shall be starting an internet campaign to get Rage Against The Machine to Xmas Number 1, Ive had enough of COD :D
