The internet is poised to see just what Apple’s got in store for everyone later today over in the States. Amongst potentially new iPhone software and a few other treats, the highlight is highly likely to be some kind of tablet device, presumably dubbed iTab, or iTablet, or, well, isomething.
This guy (the founder of several blogs, including Engadget) appears to have had said tablet for 10 days now, and can’t stop praising it. “The price will be [$] 599, 699 and 799 depending on [the] size and memory in [the] Apple tablet,” he said. “Also, [there's a] wireless keyboard + monitor connection for [a] TV.”
It looks like they’ve fixed my major bugbear with the iPhone, too – the OLED screened tablet has the “ability to have multiple apps running at same time.”
He says the battery life is around 2-3 hours when hammering the wifi (or playing games), has thumbpads on each side for mouse gestures, reads fingerprints for security, has two cameras and is potentially amazing for gaming. We don’t know what Sony and Microsoft are brewing, but this sounds utterly fabulous, and I can’t wait to see what happens later today. Credit card at the ready!

Super.
What’s this got to do with the PS3, other games consoles or gaming handhelds?
If you’re diversifying, can I write up a blog about last night’s Wolves V Liverpool game?

errrm – the iPhone has been one of the biggest gaming phenomenons of all time, so anything which adds to that range will also be of interest.

Please excuse my rant. I am (or have been) in a terrible mood this morning. I blame my male time of the month.
I shall hush from now on…

The iPhone has some awesome games, and if there is anything released today which enables a greater feedback for gamers, like controls then it will be very interesting indeed.
iPhone OS 4.0 is likely to be announced today as well.

I Got bored of waiting for apple to release a tablet last year and stumped up for a multiple touch dell instead, given that all I ever really use my computer for is photoshop, I can’t see an upgrade coming any time soon.

Anything on the size they’re expecting won’t replace handhelds that fit in your pocket and apple need a massive overhaul of their home gaming as the imacs don’t really much to offer on the games front.
At the moment it looks liek nothing more than a potential netbook challenger. It needs something pretty special to interest me at all. At the price they’re talking I’d rather just get a laptop (or use the one I have).

Rumours of a 10″ screen, put it firmly in Netbook territory
I think it will cannibalise ‘MacBook Air’ sales more than anything else

This has the potential to make a huge dent in the PSP market more than anywhere else in the games industry. I’m doubtful about it’s graphics capabilities but the Wii, the DS and the iPhone have all proven that to be a concern for the hardcore gamers only. For now, the full console market will be safe, maybe even bolstered by people who are looking for a richer experience after getting a taste of games through this and the iphone.
But if this is a success because of the games capabilities (I hear the majority of software tested on the device has been games) then I’d expect Apple to go one step further and produce a full console. I also hear Steve Jobs is back for this announcement. Turtle neck sweater and all. Roll on 7PM.

Also, on a more personal note, I can’t wait to see what music software possibilties it’s capable. It would be an awesome midi controller!

I don’t know if it will dent, unless the subsidised versions are super cheap. $599 is a high starting price.

Its going to be dearer (twice the price?) than an iPhone isn’t it…. and thats £189 subsidised
Is still fail to see what a Netbook can do that an iPhone can’t, apart from the convenience of a keyboard, therefore a small netbook sized device without a keyboard like this tablet may struggle to find a market outside of Apple fanboys.

Particularly as most Netbooks will run an open OS, whereas this looks to only be running an iPhone variation. iPhone OS is a great bit of kit for phones, but I’d rather have a full OS where I can load whatever I want in this environment. Unless it significantly outperforms netbooks I wouldn’t want one, and if the 3 hour battery on Wi-Fi is true I certainly don’t want one.

If it runs iWork & iLife will it be a game changer?
the lack of keyboard says it won’t to me
Personally I was hoping for a new iPhone, although they tend to come after Easter

Word is that it will be cheaper if you sign up to a provider (say orange, etc) when buying it. Its going to be interesting. Also, apparently, it uses iphone os 4.0 which can open and use multiple apps at the same time.

@Dunks – Yeah I noted subsidised versions above, but no word on the pricing yet. I predict high end £350 subsidised. The multi-tasking will be nice, but it’s still a closed platform.
@cc_star I think iWork or iLife will help A LOT, but like you say lack of keyboard isn’t ideal. If they allow HID drivers to be installed with a Bluetooth/USB keyboard then I can see it doing much better.

I think if it’s released at around the price you predict and they actually have a real direction for it’s use then it could be a really big deal. For £350 and a few good reasons, loads of people will get it. Im guessing the whole magazine / books / news area is going to be the big focus. With games maybe coming in at a close 2nd / 3rd. Being a designer, I just love that it’s a british designer making all these products! One thing is for sure, it will probably look nice!

No thank you, if it is just the tablet as suggested I shan’t be buying, I find Apple products overrated.

Alot of it is just the fact that they have managed to position themselves as a “fashion brand” as opposed to a gadgets manufacturer.

After years of making Ipods smaller and smaller they go and make you carry a slab. Its too big to replace and phone/ipod you can get in your pocket and its a Mac, so its never going to replace PC. Its going to be shiney, gorgeous and utterly disireable .. but still, utterly useless and nothing more than a toy.
