Valve: “We’ll Support PS3 Down The Road”

The road to humble pie, perhaps.

PS3 Slips Further Down Valve’s Priorities? [32]

Discussing upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 DLC “The Passing” with Edge, Valve’s Chet Faliszek intimated once again that the award-winning developer will support the PS3 – when the time is right.

“Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way.

“But we’ll look at it, and I’m sure down the road we’ll do it.”

It’s not the first time Valve have commented on their lack of PS3 support and the possibility of embracing Sony’s console in the future. Previous comments on the topic suggested that Valve are open to working on the platform, but only when they had the talent in-house to do so.

Of course, they also did once suggest that the PS3 is essentially “a waste of everyone’s time.” That was of course before the recent surge in PS3 sales and the bombardment of stellar PS3-exclusive games such as Uncharted 2 and upcoming crowd-pleasers such as God of War III and Gran Turismo 5; titles that showcase that the PS3 is far from the weaker of this generation’s current consoles.

  1. Down the road with Valve means in five years, just take a look at HL2:EP3. It has been confirmed by Valve, but NOTHING has been released about the game and we are getting close to three years since ep2 was released…

    • Hey, now that’s not true, they gave us a… eh… concept art image about two years ago…

      • True, such happy times :(

    • It better be amazing when (if) they release it. I’ve been waiting for so long and I’m surprised they haven’t mentioned anything about it for so long. Maybe they’ve just gone straight to HL3. That would be pretty awesome.

      • I’m pretty sure they are working on a new engine and that’s why it’s taking so long. I would also expect them to release HL2:EP3 and Portal 2 at the same time, properly in a box. Also HL3 wouldn’t be more then 1-1½ year away after Ep3.

I really can’t see them NOT announcing it this year, personally I hope they are going to announce it at Gamescom cologne this august, where I’m going to be :)

  2. Just wait until Gabe Newell opens his mouth for the opposing view

    • dahhh i cant wait for that to happen, lol

  3. “We will support PS3 when Gabe Newell’s weight will be less than 80kg”. So, never. Or maybe they’ve seen that PS3 is selling a lot and they have discovered that they love money, so this could really happen.

    • Play nice. Attacking someone you don’t like by mentioning his weight just because he has a different opinion to you is pointless.

Attack his opinion by all means. Insulting someone you don’t actually know because of those opinions makes no sense to me.

      • To be fair, I’m a big guy and I don’t develop for the PS3 either. There’s a pattern forming here. :P

      • Well, I’m a big guy too, and I didn’t want to offend anyone or attack anyone, just express an idea. I hope that nobody has misunderstood what I’ve written; if someone felt bad, please excuse me. What I wanted to say is that I don’t think that I’ll see a Valve game on my PS3, as they cleraly prefer PC and X360 because they feel better with those systems. But I still hope for a L4D Collection on PS3… it’s just a dream…

      • If you don’t develop for the PS3 we have a conspiracy on our hands :D

      • I respect what you’ve said in your reply.
Personally, I wasn’t offended. And it’s not like Newell’s girth hasn’t come up before by people who have taken umbrage with the man’s absolutely baffling and insulting remarks about the PS3.
If you meant it in jest, that’s cool. I’m sure Gabe has heard it all before. He’s also a very successful developer so I’m sure it’s water off a duck’s back at this stage.
I just like to keep things civil. We all have our flaws, and it would be a great world to live in if people didn’t point them out to us at every opportunity.
        :D

      • @Kovacs – exceedingly mature and respectful reply. No matter what prejudice we choose to pull up on (size, race, gender, etc), it’s probably best to make sure you are absolutely and utterly joking about such a thing. Especially online when text loses all subtlety. Also, there’s probably a good handful of nob-jockeys at Valve who are relatively svelte. :D

      • Now now, lets not get all PC, I’m sure even if Gabe was reading (if so, please develop for the PS3, thankyou please) he wouldn’t mind.

      • I’m not a big guy and I love the PS3, coincidence?

      • I suppose one might say that Gabe is probably worried about the PS3 resembling a George Foreman Grill and that’s what keeps him away from using one.
        .
Not me. I’d never say something like that. :D

      • @Bunimomike , I have a normal frame and a budda belly which , if I’m honest looks like a snake digesting a goat ……………and I don’t develop for ps3 either ! :D

    • Im a normal mr average sized bloke (ahem) and I don’t write programs for the PS3 either so this puts this conspiracy to bed , which is where i’m off to now !

  4. Down the road  We’re already down the road you muppet-developer! PS3 is selling well. Games are looking wonderful. If you can’t be bothered to put in the time to get to know the architecture then don’t worry. We won’t miss you. God knows I haven’t so far.

  5. Its not a question of whether they will support us, more whether we will support them, after their recent performance.

    • Good point

    • +1

    • +10

I think it would be great if Valve came out at some point in the future and applaud the PS3 as a great machine. I think such a statement could happen. After all, they are very talented developers.

      • Yeah but apparently not talented enough to work with the Cell… Dissing the PS3 is just a sorry excuse for lack of “mad dev skillz”! :D

      • maybe they are, but have you noticed how much of their output actually comes from their community?
apart from half life and left 4 dead a lot of their titles originated outside valve, even portal is, let’s say, inspired by another title.
and also how long it takes them to make most of their games, didn’t team fortress 2 take like, nine years?
and something like two years and counting for half life episode 3, somebody seems to have gotten the totally wrong idea about episodic gaming :)
and don’t get me started on steam and the restricive drm it introduced.
wasn’t it newell who suggested that end bosses of games should be locked to a download only obtainable via a one time use code?
maybe when valve make something other than yet another fps, i’ll care about their output.

    • Indeed. But if they make a new Half Life i might be more forgiving.

  6. words are cheap, and coming from valve they mean very little.

  7. I’ll believe it when I see it.
There were pseudo rumours about it a while back, when they advertised for PS3 engineers. There’s also rumours that they’re bringing Steam and their whole back catalogue to Mac and Linux…

So yeah, we’ll see, but I don’t exactly think it’s going to happen any time soon. Maybe when Duke Nukem flies.

  8. Who is this guy? If he’s not Gabe Newall or Doug Lombardi, then it obviously isn’t Valve’s opinion. Just because The Orange Box supposedly looks like crap on the PS3, it looks fine by the way, means that they are never EVER going to make games for the PS3. Unless something tragic happens to the two of them, Valve’s never making games for the PS3.

    • Newall and Lombard will go wherever the money is, simple as.

      • Meant to say “wherever they ‘think’ the money is”.

Is there an editor in the house!?

    • Chet is a writer at Valve. Apparently even Valve don’t know what he does.
      http://www.valvesoftware.com/people.html
      “Chet Faliszek – Writer
We are all still trying to figure out exactly what it is that Chet does at Valve, but at the very least he occupies office space on the 11th floor as self-proclaimed Mr. Awesome.”

  9. I heard they were thinking about supporting the Playstation 4

    • Nope, they happen to know its a waste of time. On the other hand, PS5 is a possibility.
(wow that felt strange writing PS5)

      • You should try typing ‘Missippippi’!
        ;-)

      • What the hell is a Missippippi?

      • LMFAO!!! :-D

        Ooops

  10. Didn’t gabe newell use to work for microsoft?
