Review: Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light 21

It was only a couple of days ago that we bought you the news on Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light, the new downloadable title set for release this year on the PSN and XBLA. As you read in our previous post the game is played from a fixed isometric viewpoint and features a second playable character, a Mayan tribesperson called Totec enabling drop-in/drop-out co-op play.

Although the official website is little more than a holding page there is a smattering of new information emerging including details on how the co-op will work. Both characters obviously have different abilities and weapons with Lara wielding her dual pistols and a grappling hook to help the duo to get to those hard to reach places, whereas Totec is able to throw spears not only at enemies but at walls to provide footholds for Lara. Totec is also able to raise his shield above his head to provide Lara a platform to climb on.

Quite how this in depth co-op play translates to single player gaming isn’t yet known unless some form of Trine-like ‘self co-op’ is available, or the levels feature a different design. Either way I’m pretty hyped for this spin-off title which sees a return to a more retro styled basic gameplay. Especially as in recent years Lara’s 3D platforming and targeting skills has been more miss than hit.
