Unity3D, the browser-based tech that enables users to play full games without having to download them to their PCs, now supports the PlayStation 3 according to VentureBeat. In addition to the latest version of the engine covering the PS3, it’ll also support Google Android and the iPad.
It’s not clear whether this will mean that previously Windows and Mac-based games will just ‘work’ on the PS3 with a small client installed (presumbly via a Firmware Update) or whether games will need to be recompiled, but either way it’ll bring a raft of new titles to the platform almost instantly.
For an example of what’s possible with Unity3D, check out Tropical Paradise.

Surely this means a Flash update of some sort, which would be even better news ?

Err, Unity3D isn’t just for browser games, it’s a development platform, like, for example, Unreal Engine 3. It’s very popular with browser game developers, but it can compile out standalone apps for iPhone, PC, Mac, and now PS3, etc too, which I believe is what the announcement is about. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they could introduce the Unity plug-in to the PS3′s browser, but I don’t think this is what they’re saying.

This sounds good but for a browser that frequently crashes, it will probably be something that I won’t use much

That is impressive, some of those games look as good quality as some PSN download releases.

Like above, this is not a browser plugin. I work with unity (arguably the best indie game engine out there) ; this is a game engine for building PS3 games. The plugin only works on PC/Mac, which is unfortunate as it would be awesome otherwise :P

you have to download a plugin on pc, sony would have to issue a firmware update to support this surely.
lets hope they do, and the galactica game will work on ps3
