Creators of Record of Agarest, Compile Heart will release Neptune exclusively on the PS3 this summer, details of which will be further revealed in less than 24 hours.
Blurring the lines between videogame sub-culture and real-life, the RPG focuses on Neptune, a videogame console that can transform into a girl. This should come as no surprise – this is a Japanese RPG after all – and we all know about their unhealthy fixation with things “morphing” into other things over there.
The game is set in Geimugyokai (Games Industry) with four distinct worlds. Rinbox, Lasdition, Ruwii and Neptune’s own Plateume. You can guess which console is represented by the other three names. Each world has a goddess which are colour coded accordingly: green, black, white and – for fictional console Neptune – purple.
The meta-ness continues with game companies such as Nippon Ichi and Gust represented as individual characters, while you’ll also be able to summon angels from actual games on your hard-drive (or from images in your PS3 Photo Library).
Naturally, the antagonist of the piece is Majicon; a device used in Japan by game pirates.
Chances of Neptune seeing a release outside of its native land? Slim. But you have to admit the concept is pretty neat. Rumours of a hidden boss called “Nightmare-thrower” are unfounded at this time.
