Digital Spy is reporting that the UK’s gaming market has dropped 24% compared to last week, with unit sales dropping 21% to just 650,382 games sold. Citing figures from Chart-Track, the report attributes the downturn to a “lack of significant releases during the Easter period”, and includes the rise of free-to-play social and casual games as an influence.
“Essentially it comes down to what is being released,” said Chart-Track senior account manager Chris Poole. “Easter was relatively quiet, really, and many people will be holding back for the big titles to come. I also imagine it is a combination of things, such as the weather.” Poole also says that after the likes of Modern Warfare 2, such a dip is “understandable.”
Poole does mention that there were no big release last week, either, yet the sales figures showed many more sales.
