Biblical Fantasy Announced

Right, here goes. This is a bit of a mouthful so step away from the monitor, squint slightly and try to pronounce the title of this game: El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. Phew!

This game was recently debuted in Japan but now it’s being announced for PS3 and Xbox360 in North American and EU territories. A 3rd person action fantasy game based on an ancient mythology and featuring various monstrous enemies and mammoth weapons is perhaps a description which could be applied to many games recently (Dante, Kratos, Bayonetta and that bloke from Darksiders are sharpening a shank as we speak). The twist in the tale for El Shaddai is that it is based on a book of the Old Testament – the Book of Enoch.

The premise is that Enoch must defeat the Fallen Angels in order to save humankind from the great flood which was ordered back when God used to be vengeful and have a bit of character about him. You know, before he went all “love thy neighbour” and tambourine-rattling when he had kids.

I’m going to be quiet now before I risk upsetting religionists again. Here are some screens.

  1. Odd choice of book as it’s not in nearly 100% of Bibles

  2. looks… arty.

Funniest thing i have read or heard all week CB! :)

  4. Isn’t anything biblical fantasy by definition? ;D

    • Isn’t anything biblical, fantasy by definition? rather.

    • That depends on your theological viewpoint. If you believe the bible is gospel, then no. If, like me, and by the sounds of it you, believe it all to be a load of made up nonsense to keep society in order back in the day, then yes, it is fantasy.

  5. plus will the invulnerability cheat be known ala quake/doom as God mode?

  6. Biblical eh?
I guess retards need games too.

  7. Visually it reminds me a bit of No More Heroes as well as REZ.

  8. I love the shading style but I dont think i could play a game from the bible… (sorry just me being honest) no it has nothing to do with me being gay, I’m pretty sure I wouldnt burst into flames if it entered my ps3. and why you ask would it enter my ps3 if i said i wasnt going to play it? well becuase my hubby is a through and through christian if you dont count him skipping the lectures about how they hate gays even though their not supposed to hate so they just spread lies about a supposed gay agenda which ( i hate to say it) i know nothing about. so if anyones feeling kind enough to give me the catch up lesson cause i obviously didnt get the memo in the mail.

    • What on earth are you talking about?

    • Chill dude :). Not the place! Also, that was quite a random half rant, its taking me a few times reading it to understand quite what point your trying to get across.

  9. Sounds awful like Bayonetta. Looks awful like a dog who’s eaten a packet of crayons and done a colourful poo. Dear or dear, will probably be really popular in japan then, they seem to like nonsense there.

  10. Interesting. I expect many Christian and Jewish gamers would be a little puzzled at the game being called a ‘Biblical Fantasy’ since the book of Enoch isn’t regarded as scripture by most of them, and isn’t one of the books of the Bible.

Anyways, a quick read of the synopsis of the Book of Enoch gives me the impression that it’s quite trippy, full of visions and the like. I expect the game will be much the same. Will it be any good? Well that’s another question entirely isn’t it?
