As usual with firmware updates, version 3.40 brings with it some hidden features not mentioned on any of the pre-launch changelogs and Blog posts. Alongside the new stuff we learnt about last night – Facebook, video editing, rating and photo uploading are the following minor tweaks and additions:
- Your Friends List will now show Trophy levels as you hover over them.
- Friends Lists now have a golden ‘plus’ on them for anyone subscribing to PlayStation Plus.
- The colours of your Friend’s boxes faded in, rather than ‘jumping’ from the normal grey.
- There’s an option to calibrate the sensors in PlayStation Move controllers.
- Deep Color Output has been added for TV sets that support the feature over HDMI.
- The Video Editor cannot be used on videos installed on the hard drive before Firmware 3.40.
- A few PlayStation Plus items have appeared in the menus, such as Automatic Downloading.
If any more appear, we’ll let you know.

This 3.40 is turning out to be a good one. How the trophy level on the gamer card thing is a hidden feature i don’t know, that’s huge. Though i can imagine sony have fucked it up by not displaying the % of the way through the level and instead just showing the actual trophy level.

That’s what I thought too, loads of people have asked for trophy information directly on the Friends List so I would have thought Sony would have been keen to highlight that in the 3.40 features. Unless as you say it’s only a half-arsed addition!
My Plasma supports Deep Colo[u]r also, so I’ll be interested to try that and see what difference it makes…

Well, it definitely does only show the level, not the % of the way through that level you are. Pretty much completely pointless. Once you start getting to 14/15, it takes a fair few platinums to progress a level. As good as useless as far as I’m concerned.

Yeh finally, not having to wait just to see some ones trophies.

It only shows the level though. Not progression or even number of Trophies. Better than nothing though I suppose.

Yeah, level progression would be nice and a trophy breakdown of Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies would be even nicer!! ;)

And you’ve got to download the video editor/uploader too. Which is a good thing though. I wouldn’t want my precious HDD space being used up by something I may not use.

IMO I think they should remove all the apps you have to download (unless they’re installed) and put them onto the store, so if you want to use the video editor, you go onto the store and download it from there, like Vidzone is. Saves the XMB from becoming too cluttered, especially if you don’t use the extras.

Interesting. My PSEye no longer works on the hub. Must have something to do with the upcoming move.

Mine remembers cookies again between sessions – at last! – and also the Play.com site doesn’t seem to crash the browser any more, but that could just be that there aren’t too many elements in the current promotion to tax the browser too hard…

Depends on how you look at it. For me, this will give me content for free, that i would have purchased during a year anyway, granted i pay an ammount now, with Wipeout HD AND LittleBigPlanet, plus some other smaller stuff, i’m pretty sure that’s money saved already.

There’s a very big difference between getting things at 2 discounted price and getting things free. Massive.
