Just in case our 10/10 review didn’t convince you enough that Rockstar’s sprawling Western epic wasn’t top quality gaming on a disk, the US NPD sales data has confirmed it: Red Dead Redemption was the biggest selling game in May.
The monthly sales figures, posted here last night, show that sandbox cowboy action is the way to go, with the 360 version outselling the PS3 version by a massive margin. Still, both versions sat at the top quite nicely, with the Wii’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 just pipped to 2nd place.
Good to see THQ’s UFC up there too, TSA’s 2nd 10/10 in a week of high scoring games back in May. Hardware wise, it’s the DS well out on top followed closely by the Wii. The Xbox 360 and PS3 lag behind, Microsoft’s console out on top by 50,000 units.
The PSP props up the back selling just 60,000 units throughout the month.

I thought people said the Wii had flatlined?
They are ridiculous sales figures.
Red Dead Redemption got almost a week head start on Super Mario Galaxy 2 as well, will be interesting to see how that spilled over into June

The Wii has relatively underperformed over the past 12 months in the sense that sales figures have been sliding. Nintendo know this and I’m sure they’re working out what to do next. However, in absolute terms, Wii’s sales figures for hardware and sofware will still look unbelievably healthy what with them having around the same global sales as the PS3 and 360 added together.

Well the games for the Wii hasn’t been the best in Q3-Q4 of 2009, but with the massive amount of great games in 2010 and 2011 for the Wii, it will pick up speed again.

May?! When are June’s figures published? I’m interested to know how the launch of the 360 Slim in the US impacted the hardware figures!

How many people who own both 360 and ps3 bought the 360 version of red dead redemption due to it being a better looking version with the ps3 getting the half arsed port again. Maybe if the game was coded using ps3 as lead console, it might be a different result.

Exactly, I’m beginning to fall out with Rockstar this generation. While they still make great games, the ‘soul’ seems to have been taken out of virtually every area, especially in GTA IV.

Yip… it seems they don’t give a shit about the PS3 version of any game. Shame really, as the PS3 could produce some serious graphics. The game looks great, but it could have been allot better.

Time and again i have pointed out how lazy and shit rockstar actually are, they release 5 gtas that used the same concept, in fact 6 becuase all 4 had was a new engine and a polish, after vice city gta became shit.

You have a point. If I had both consoles, I might have bought it on the 360. I’m not a fanboy of the PS3…I love it to death, but if I could have bought a 360 I would have, and then buy RDR. No dinero I’m afraid =)

The thing that bugs me is that Rockstar got the GTA ball rolling with the help of the ps1 and more so, the ps2. The GTA series of games sold loads on the ps2 and yet they leave the ps3 with a bit of a rush job when compaired to the 360 version. After all the help from sony combined with the sales on ps2, i just expected a better port and support for the ps3 with GTA4 and RD/Redemption. Don’t get me wrong, i think the game looks amaizing on ps3, but the fact that it looks better on 360 makes my blood boil. Using the 360 as the lead platform for coding games is simply holding the ps3 back…..thank goodness most developers are switching to ps3 for lead development.

I have both consoles and I bought this on PS3, love it and am still playing it.
I bought the 360 for exclusives and promised myself I would continue buy multi-plat on PS3.
It was a decision based purely on the comfort and instant recognition on the Dualshock, a few glitches and sub-par graphics aren’t the be-all and end-all for me, but in no way, shape or form do I agree with the way Rockstar appear to be treating PS3 this generation.

This is to Owendarko| – Can you please stop declaring ” best game ever ” ? Ok its your opinion but you don’t need to tell the whole world, besides ” best game ever ” goes to San Andreas.
