inFamous 2 “Impossible on 360”

“Xbox – flame shield ON!” It’s a pity Kinect isn’t out at the moment or we’d be asking Microsoft’s motion device to do just that, protecting us from the recent bombastic statements coming from inFamous developer Sucker Punch. Commenting to Play Magazine, the plucky studio have stoked the perpetual console war flame-pit once again with the claim that, just like Uncharted 2 – a game they seem to be imitating in more ways that one – inFamous 2 could not be possible on rival Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console.

Quoting the PS3’s arcane and voodoo hardware configuration (known to make experienced devs cry like babies), Sucker Punch Development Director, Chris Zimmerman, states:

“There’s just more processing power on the PS3. If you look at games like Uncharted 2 that’s a game that you actually can’t do on Xbox [360] no matter how clever you are. InFamous 2 is going to be the same way. You’ll look at it and see that there’s no way we could have done this game on 360. In technical terms the biggest thing that we’ve done is migrate a much larger part of our code to run on the SPUs.”

It isn’t the only revelation Sucker Punch are offering, admitting that some “dumb decisions” were made on the first game when it came to how it was developed. Chris continues:

“The PS3 has this elaborate architecture where there’s a whole bunch of different places you can have your code run and we had it all running in the slow part.”

Somehow we’re finding it hard to believe the first statement when they come out and admit something like the second. Really? You really ran it all on the slow part? Focusing on the positive, however, it does suggest the sequel will be something special. At least, you know, now that it’s (hopefully) running on the fast part.

  1. Im too old for all this fanboy nonsense and my old head says that they are just stoking this up for publicity because as the saying goes “any publicity is good publicity!”
I have to admit to becoming an android fanboy over the last few weeks though (gulp)

  2. Why do you people care so damn much about what this one guy says. If he wants to say it’s not possible on the 360 then let him say it. In America, there is such thing as freedom of speech, and it looks like he is speaking freely. I doubt Sony paid him to say that, because it IS his game, and HE does want to get a lot of sales.
Maybe this game isn’t possible on the 360. Maybe he’s saying the 360 can’t handle the game as well as the PS3 and it would be a shit experience on the 360.
Really any game is possible on any system. Just tone down the graphics A LOT, then compress EVERYTHING, then you get a crap port of a good game. The game would not be nearly as good, but it’s still there. Idk how to really explain it.

  3. Quite revealing for a Dev to admit that they wasn’t aware of the consoles “hidden” power; but I never noticed any slow down on game when I played it.

  4. i dont wanna sound like a fanboy or anything, kinda unavoidable i guess, but seriously. compare ps3 exclusives to xbox exclusives. when the ps3 is used as the lead platform, the games come out looking better, period. they only really seem to suffer with games which have been ported over from xbox.

and in regards to the final fantasy comment, well yeah you can just split it up onto multiple discs. but even then, the ps3 version still looked better.

im definitely not out there on my soapbox claiming the ps3 is the be all end all of gaming, but i really dont understand how people can continue to argue over which looks better now/will do in the future.

  5. Well, as a matter of fact PS3 has more processing power than 360 just as blu-ray disk has more capacity than DVD.
The REAL deal is that it’s irrelevant here – if this game sucks like the first one, no pretty graphics will save it.
    P.S. If it’s possible on PS3 it’s also possible on hi-end PC.
