If you’re holding out for the PlayStation 4 to be released any time soon you’d better think again. Sony Worldwide Studios boss, Shuhei Yoshida, has said in an interview with Develop that Microsoft and Nintendo will release their next consoles before Sony.
“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move.”
“Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move.”
“Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”
Many have suggested that’s Sony’s early struggles this generation were partly down to Microsoft getting the jump on them. Sony clearly seem pretty happy with the PS3 having a long life cycle despite its slow start. If Microsoft’s European executive Chris Lewis is to be believed, Kinect will extend the Xbox 360’s life by 5 years which would mean the PS4 might not be seen for quite some time (or maybe Sony don’t believe the Xbox 360 can last 5 years). Capcom, however, recently suggested we would see the PS4 in the next 2-3 years.
Who knows when the PS4 will be released, but with Sony focused on 3D and Move for the PS3 it certainly won’t be soon.

Thinking about playing a PS4 sounds so futuristic! Along with hoverboards, lightsabers and Gran Turismo 5. I can’t wait to get old!

As a mainly PC gamer, I think my biggest issue with a PS4 is that it’s hard to see how it could be better than a then-current PC.
For PS1 and especially PS2 they were well ahead of the curve and it took a while for PCs to catch up – PS3 was already behind before it launched and this will be the case now for any future consoles.
That said, I bought a launch day PS3 and I like my gadgets so I’d buy one :) ;)

Consoles can never compare to PCs in terms of spec but it’s a different proposition. At any point in it’s life, the cost of a PC that could play games the way they play on PS3 would be far more expensive than the console. Also, as time passes the newer games demand more from a PC so you need to keep upgrading it, newer console games work on the same hardware.
.
Imagine how much it would have cost to build a PC that would play games as well as the PS3 at launch. Way more than the £425 of the console. Now imagine you hadn’t upgraded that PC at all since then. Think you’d be able to play recent releases at the res and speed of a PS3?

Hey I’m a gamer – the cost of the hardware is irrelevant – well not really ;) But sacrifices will be made to get the fastest kit!! :) :)
Of course yours is an extremely important point, which I agree totally with, my recent-ish graphics card cost more than a Slim PS3 ;)
My main point though, was that at the time PS2 launched it would have been very difficult for a consumer to build a PC which could play games as well as the PS2, these days of course this is no longer the case.
I was actually quite disappointed by the performance of the PS3 *at launch* – my then current dual core PC was already capable of 1920*1080 and reasonable performance in the games I played.
Things have definitely improved as developers have got to grips with the PS3’s hardware but for me at least, the performance against the PC really lessens the appeal of a new console.

Can your PC play Uncharted? ;)
Deathbrin
Oh, incase you would choose to answer i guess i should precede: No. Different architecture and would require an extremely powerful future tech machine to emulate.

@Deathbrin…Can your PS3 play Mass Effect2 ;p :) :)
I would *really* like to see how much better Uncharted 2 could be if it was re-coded to run on a bleeding-edge PC ;p :)
I never said I didn’t like my PS3, I do, really :)
It’s just that my PC outperforms it and that makes me sad :(

Still think we haven’t seen the best the PS3 can deliver yet.
It seems now developers are now starting to fully explore and tap it’s potential which can only mean better games for us.

We have only had the ps3 for 3 years, thats not enough, whos complaining?? The ps2 lasted 6
crazyoaktree
Is the PS2 dead yet?
Origami Killer
I know, who cares about ps4 tbh??
Deathbrin
Yeah there’s the point that SONY are still pushing the PS2, so there’s no need for the 360 to die with the launch of the new console.
