A list of the top 100 selling multi-format games of 2010 in Japan so far has been published by Famitsu, and picked up (and translated) on NeoGAF. Topping the chart is the evergreen New Super Mario Bros for the Wii, with 3,887,045 units now sold in total. Behind, in second and third place are two Dragon Quest games for the DS, with VI shifting 1,293,916 copies and Joker 2 moving 1,194,584.
The PSP shows up in fifth and sixth positions, with Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep selling 728,286 units and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker 727,823. The first PS3 game is Yakuza 4, in tenth place with 552,531 copies sold.
It’s a fair mix from there downwards, with the Wii and DS dominating but with plenty of presence from Sony’s console peppered around. Hokuto Musou is in eleventh position, Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition has sold a quarter of a million and Final Fantasy XIII is still moving copies, with 200,000 sold this year making the grand overall total for SquareEnix’s epic RPG a massive 1,891,435 units sold.
The first Xbox 360 game is Monster Hunter Frontier Online, moving 82,490 copies to claim 58th place in the chart, just below PS3 exclusive God of War III, which sold just 88,956. You can see the whole thing here.

New SMB Wii is amazing. Gameplay is just like old school Mario 3 or World but with some funky new twists, great graphics and 4 player carnage!

I would have thought those figures would have been alot higher. The top game is just under 4 million, but the countries population is 127 million.

Given how short Mario Wii is and how pretty much every level falls apart if played with any more than 2 players I’m shocked it did *this* well. Sure, Wii gamers are hardly spoilt for choice so most owners were going to get a copy but still…

Are you serious? GoW didn’t make an impact in Japan?
A Western-developed game series traditionally known to be most popular in the West, doesn’t do well in Japan, of all places?
Nooooooooooooo!
