Take that chubby American Xbox 360 owners, svelte and nubile PS3 movie lovers will soon be returning to their usual rotund shape when Netflix releases an update to its service in a couple of months.
The near-future will see no more unnecessary getting up from the couch and burning those precious, precious calories, as a disc-free version of Netflix on the PS3 will be launched in a matter of weeks.
Speaking during Netflix’s Q2 2010 financial round-up, CEO Reed Hastings (awesome name, sounds like he should be in the Fantastic 4) said:
“Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn’t require a disc, and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements.”
Any chance you can make the PS3 shoot chocolate straight from the tray into our fat, gaping mouths as well, Reed? Thanks.

Nope, no Netflix for Europe. We do have a new movie service called Mubi on the way though. Its focus is on quality rather than quantity so expect to see some really great and interesting stuff there.

OK cool cheers Anima, I’d heard about Mubi but didn’t know what it was going to be for, I might be a bit more interested in it now.

Mubi is really only arthouse movies. Cool if you’re into that but it’s not really comparable to Netflix.

I can see LoveFilm being on the PS3 in the near future. They’ve already got their streaming service up on their site and certain Sony and Samsung BD players. PS3 would be an obvious choice to further that.

But you would lose all the fun of never getting the film through the post in time or heavily scratched.

And the problem with LoveFilm is that you have to pay-per-view for all the recent films that you would want to watch. Therefore, it becomes pretty irrelevant.

Already having one PS3 Blu-Ray drive break on me I support anything that reduces wear on my new Blu-Ray drive.

I think full acceptance of these services will arrive when fast broadband is actually, er…fast. And the price of hiring a movie online is considerably cheaper than waddling off to Blockbusters…

I can’t wait until i don’t have to use the disk anymore. It’s so hard to find in the dark.
