Halo Reach Quitters Will Be Penalised

Bungie has been speaking about its plans to reduce the amount of people match quitting in Halo Reach.  Bungie’s Community Director – Brian Jarrard – has said that people who frequently quit games will be punished in some way;

“I think one of the new things people will be excited about too, is how we’re going to be able to penalise people who are habitually quitting out of games, which isn’t exactly cheating, but it creates a really negative experience for everybody else in the game.

We actually have new tools now to detect that and eventually, people who do this habitually will actually be penalised.  We want to be able to remove them from the population so they can’t make everyone else keep having a bad time.”

Nothing specific has been mentioned, but this has already upset as many people as it’s pleased.  The most common arguments have been things like “what if I need the toilet” and “what if something happens in my home that requires urgent attention.”  I think the key phrase to focus on is “habitually quitting” – which in my mind means people who consistently do it, rather than once or twice.

  1. Street Fighter has a good system for monitoring ‘Quitters’

They should take inspiration from them, its a good idea….

    • Are you sure it did, are you sure it didn’t simply have nothing? As if I hot the win 10 fights in a row online by actually being good

  2. It’s relatively easy to fix. Every time a player quits they are scored as though they have lost that game/round and some xp removed from their total.
I think that’s fair as I, like others, have a little lad to sometimes answer a night time call, sometimes need to answer the phone/door, etc. but I wouldn’t be too upset at having a few xp removed from my total. It will mainly affect those who quit and quit and quit, time after time.

Personally, I’m quite happy with people quitting on me in FIFA when I’m 3-0 up after a few minutes. It makes me laugh as I try to guess when the ubiquitous “lost connection to the other player” message will pop up. The only thing EA could do to improve the quitter message in FIFA would be if they sent a mocking message to the quitter and a “lost connection to the other player, I wonder why… ;-)” to me.

    • I happily sit there and get my ass served to me on a plate instead of quitting . Its just the polite and honourable thing to do.

      • Me too, once in Halo 2, my entire team quit on capture the flag, so I drove the warthog for the other team whilst they got the captures :)

  3. FIFA has massive problems with cultural quitters, which they haven’t sorted for FIFA 11.

They need to be given a 10min ban to stop them joining another game and if they’re long term quit percentage goes above a reasonable level then they can only ‘find’ other similarly levelled quit level, so people with a quit level of < 5% can find each other, of <10% and so on. I think its different with shooters where the games are usually half hour long, I treat Warhawk like an MMO, drop-in to a nearly full server, play as many games as I've got time for and quit when I'm done, the server based games have people constantly trying to join them, but on the smaller P2P hosted games I can see how its a problem and I'm not sure what the answer is

    • Fifa does have huge problems with this, i agree. To be fair though, you can include max dnf percentage in your search for a player (or is that tiger woods? Sure fifa does it). It is still 2 hugely frustrating problem in fifa though.

      • and ea are so silly that if the opponent quits, the win doesnt go towards the ton up trophy.

  4. A few games do this already, either by stopping you gaining any XP for a few games or penalizing you some XP at the time. If you need to go to the toilet hold it in until the match is over, they don’t last that long! The odd quit shouldn’t be punished, I wonder how they are going to classify habitual quitting.

  5. this is a good step forward.

  6. this is good for gamers, but I wasn’t keen on Uncharted doing it to be honest. Once or twice my connection lost and I was penalised, it’s a little annoying as it took ages to gain that XP/money back too. I think as long as it’s done based on games played/games quit, and if it’s above a certain level, they get penalised.

    • Very good idea. 95% would be fine, I feel. It allows for the odd game here and there to go tits up (with connection).

  7. Uncharted 2 does this, it’s really annoying, especially when you lose you’re internet connection and it throws you out and you still lose a load of points!

    • yes, frustrating!

    • Agreed. My internet isn’t the best, so losing xp due to that is the most frustrating thing ever!

  8. Metal Gear Online has this feature. Quit a few times abd its ok, but if you quit too many, you get banned from playing for 10 mins. If it continues, the next ban is longer, and so on. Very good idea.

  9. Uncharted 2’s online penalises you by taking away some of your cash. It’s good to see Bungie put in a system like this.

    • Uncharted2’s does it when the connection drops, and because of the PSP hosting of games its not always the person who drops out that was the one with the problem, sometimes its the hosting machine having an upload spaz and it drops the connection to an ‘innocent’ player who then gets penalised for quitting…. Uncharted2 punishes quitters but it catches innocents in their penalties

  10. I don’t play Halo, but I do support penalities for quitters. Like what was mentioned above me, those games already utilize the penalty system and I love it. Quitters can ruin what would have otherwise been a fun play.
