Torchlight Coming to Consoles?

Torchlight was a classic-style dungeon crawler that came out as a downloadable game for PC last year. It achieved some acclaim from those in the know (and me) and after some great discounting on Steam it has achieved upwards of 750,000 sales. An impressive figure for a reasonably niche game that has been pirated mercilessly.

So the news (via Joystiq) that it may be coming to the PSN and XBLA is very interesting indeed. It would certianly be nice to see the developers (Runic Games) get wider recognition for what they achieved with a tiny development window. Bringing their much-lauded title on to platforms where piracy is less of a concern might also be good for the bank balance and, given that a sequel is in the making, that would no doubt be welcome too.

It’s all a little bit vague just now but the word is that Runic are planning for a release “hopefully” sometime before “the holidays”. They’re also hoping to get the sequel on to consoles sometime soon after the PC and Mac. It will be interesting to see how they get over potential control issues moving from mouse and keyboard to analogue sticks and triggers but perhaps Move and Kinect can help out there.

  1. I have a mouse and keyboard for my ps3, I was never really a fan of dungeon crawlers though.

  2. I never played it. How much is it on Steam now?

  3. And I’ve bought it for PC, now I regret it. I love PS3 and dualshock, on PC I still haven’t completed the game, I just don’t like PC gaming. Yet this game looked too tempting.

  4. its like wow-offline. a cool little game that will be well recieved im sure.

    • It’s alot more Diablo inspired

  5. Just looked it up, about time we got some Diabloesque games

  6. I used to love Eye of the Beholder, Dark Alliance, Dungeon Master. Big fan of Dragon Age! I’ve never heard of this. Thanks, cb!!! :-)

Ok, just been to read about it. I can’t wait! I’m off to get it right now (PC). Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  7. I really want Torchlight but my pc is like the Krillian of personal computers would be cool to hold the Move has a torch and to battle your through your enemies if it was in a FPV though.

  8. I played the first one for a few days. I found it was a nice little game, but It had a short lasting appeal due to the fact that all the areas looked and felt somewhat the same, and it felt like you never really progressed much.
If the sequel turns out better in this field then a console version would make sense, and could be a good buy.
It’s a genre that is pretty much pc territory, but I think it should be possible to bring it to consoles, if done right. Move could perhaps work well with this genre, and Torchlight together with Deathspank (note to self: need to buy that…) could maybe be the stepping-stone that brings future Hack&Slash-RPG’s (I’m looking at you Diablo 3 and Dungeon Siege 3) to consoles, where pirates (pretty much) only excist fighting ninjas and eating cake :)…

Now I’m off to drink a mug o’ tea!
    +1 to energy
    +4 against pirates
    -7 in bladder control

  9. I’ll wait and nervously keep my fingers crossed for Diablo III !
