In an article on major media studios’ involvement with web video content, the New York Times claims Sony executives have confirmed that the company’s own site Crackle will be coming to the PlayStation Network.
The site is home to a number of original series, and has gathered a decent following, but whilst Sony has stuck at the web content game longer than other studios, Crackle is still failing to make a profit. The Times suggests that in expanding to console, “Crackle could be the primary entertainment channel for Sony’s PlayStation Network”.
It makes sense too: as the article points out, Crackle is aimed at the same male 18-34 group that “devours video games”. Eric Berger, SVP of Digital Networks at Sony Pictures Television, says that the rapidly-expanding PSN “offers a great deal of scale that is terrific from an advertiser perspective” – advertising being a substantial stream of revenue when talking about web content.
There’s no real confirmation in the article that such an expansion is about to happen, more that Sony are considering it as a move to make Crackle profitable. But it would again bolster the PS3′s digital media credentials, following services such as the iPlayer, the Video Store, and Mubi.

I’m with the others on this: never heard of it! Still, like apnomis said, more services = a good thing. Hopefully it will attract others to do the same if it works well (4OD please).

I remember Crackle was a default RSS channel on the PSP. It didn’t really have anything interesting on it, but then again, i didn’t know what was ment to be good on it either

I remember looking at it in those feeds when it first came out, and never using them again. Didn’t even realise it was web content, thought it was a unique PSP video feed.

Three key words were missing from this sentence:
“Crackle could be the primary entertainment channel for Sony’s PlayStation Network”.
and they are:
“in the US”.
