News comes today from CVG that Warner Bros have cancelled the sandbox game This Is Vegas, more than two years after its announcement.
Announced way back in April 2008, This Is Vegas was supposed to have players trying to dance, seduce and gamble their way to the top of Sin City, but very little has been heard about the game since. Apparently, a “cast iron source” has told CVG that it has now been canned. The source says that Warner quietly shut the game’s developers, Surreal Software, down back in June this year.
Warner picked the game up as part of Midway’s assets last year, by which point the project had already cost $43 million. It is estimated that to complete the project would’ve brought the grand total to over $50 million between Midway and Warner. “It’s a ridiculous waste of money,” said CVG’s source. “A silly budget when you think that games like Konami’s Saw – which made profit – were built with around $3m and BlackLight Tango Down was made for $2.5m.”
We’ve yet to hear anything from Warner on an official cancellation, but with the studio shuttered and development halted, it shouldn’t be too long.

I always thought that ever since Midway went south. Shame though.

Seems like a complete waste of funds, but to be honest what little of the game I saw didn’t get me excited!

Wow, those sized budgets are ridiculous for games with the exception of the top AAA’s. Shame.

Wait a minute it has already cost £43M and it would need another £50M to complete, or it would need ‘just’ £7M to complete it for a total budget of £50M? If it’s the latter surely that’s a crazy waste of money!! Surely the game couldn’t have been so bad for it not to even make the £7M back, given that £43M is already a sunk cost???

“the grand total to over $50 million” so 50 mill overall. Still a huge amount though, as you said.

Well it is a huge waste now isn’t it. It’s $43m completely wasted. Now if the game was released, and made $30m back it would’nt be so bad, but now it’s a waste of $43m

Obviously a huge shame but I’m not in the least surprised to find myself reading this news.

Man, I can remember watching trailers for this at the start of 2009 or so and it actually looked to be in a fairly advanced state of development at that time. Guess not.

Wow(!) Think I saw that coming this time last year. Always think it was a questionable idea for a game concept but it’s still always sad to see all the money used so far effectively wasted. Just goes to show the high pressures the industry faces these days with the likes of this and Real Time Worlds recent issues.

Looked like a bit of goofy fun to be honest. Wouldn’t have bought it, probably rented it, since I think it looked pretty cool. But ah well, won’t have that chance to play it now I guess.
