Some lovely new gameplay footage of Mortal Kombat has emerged from PAX – and by lovely we of course mean disgusting and brutal.

It shows the classic showdown of Sub Zero vs. Scorpion, and although the game seems slightly on the slow side in comparison to fighters that have been shown lately, it appears to have lost none of its charm.  Nice finisher too!

  2. That looks amazing, What the hell happens at 2:50 that was a bit nuts.
Been so long since I enjoyed a fighting game. I could see myself enjoying this, as long as the basic controls are kept simple and the real skill comes in practising the big moves.
The main selling point of a fighting game is that you have to be able to have a friend round who has never played the game, yet within a couple of fights they are able to at least compete and win a few rounds.

  4. Sub Zero still cheap as hell then…
I was a total MK/MKII nut back in the day and this has actually send a shiver down my spine. Can’t wait.

  5. Wow – that was so tense in the the 3rd round even just watching it.

Would be a must buy if I had the chance of playing local two player, but as I don’t, it’s not really for me… I’ll have to stick to RDKF with my daughter

  6. Personally I’m not impressed at all. Looks to be the same clunky MK mechanic which just hasn’t transferred well to the 21st century. Sluggish and awkward, if MK vs DC:U was anything to go by (definitely not one to go buy). For one of the finest, most fluid fighters of this generation, I’d say look at Naruto, ultimate ninja storm.

    • I played the demo recently and the movement and jumps seem to floaty. Also there isn’t much of a degree of variation within what I saw, I mean I only played as Naruto because that’s all that was allowed but still I couldn’t find any alternate combos which you’d expect to see in a fighter.

      • There are alternate combos (using different directions at different points in the combo), but I suppose it boils down to what you want in a fighting game. As noted above:

“The main selling point of a fighting game is that you have to be able to have a friend round who has never played the game, yet within a couple of fights they are able to at least compete and win a few rounds.”

Naruto accomplishes that with a simple mechanic (Square to attack) that belies the underlying complexity of the game.

That said, the single-player “Story” mode is a pile of shite – ignore that bit!

  8. Looking very polished. I actually prefer the slower, slightly less frantic gameplay speed. Brutal as ever too, I hoppe they don’t get into many office arguments.

    • Agreed. In my advanced years ( 32 Yo ) I cant keep up to the frenetic pace of MK3 wich was my fave
