A multi-platform maybe?

Rumour: Quantic Dream’s Next is Sci-Fi 44

David Cage, the founder of Heavy Rain’s developers Quantic Dream, has talked about exploring other opportunities for the company’s next project. The success of the PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavy Rain seems to have whetted Cage’s appetite for sales.

When asked “[with Heavy Rain] Do you ever regret sticking with one platform?” Cage replied “No, honestly, no. I’m absolutely happy with the agreement with Sony, it was the perfect move. It was the right platform for what we wanted to achieve”

“The question is more for us now, with Heavy Rain it was right, but after Heavy Rain the question can be asked whether we should stick to one platform or open out to different platforms. Now that we’re established why are we limiting ourselves to one share of the market when we can reach more. There are pros and cons and it’s not an easy decision.”

The pros obviously are, enabling more people to appreciate your game and obviously the greater revenue opportunities. On the downside you tend not to get the same level of platform-holder’s support when you embark on a multi-platform project.

Cage went on to add that they weren’t looking at anything specific, just that they were asking the questions and exploring the options.

It’s not yet known what Quantic have up their sleeves, but it is said that Cage isn’t interested in making a sequel to Heavy Rain next. Personally, I’m hoping for a sequel to the Dreamcast’s Omikron: Nomad Soul although reading the solitary paragraph about Omikron 2 it sounds like the computing power needed may not be around for a few years.

  1. Multi-platform often means that one platform suffers. lets hope it isn’t the case if these guys go multi

    • They don’t strike me as a shortcut taking dev, and seem more interested in people enjoying the product than making a quick buck

    • yep, more shoddy ports…lets hope not!

  2. Heavy Rain had ~18GB, does he plan to squeeze the next game on several DVD’s?

    • LBP reportedly had 40gb of data and that been distributed as a 2gig download. inFamous was supposedly around the same and that was a 7gig download (pretty sure they could have got that down to 6.8 or smaller if they tried)

Often the reason that Blu-ray games take up more space is because there is no point compressing (and decompressing on-the-fly) the data, also the drive has a slow seek speed, so it helps to have duplicated data on the disc… Basically the Blu-ray disc is often the reason for larger data sizes

  3. Well I read recently that Cage was quite annoyed/upset that Sony had forced his studio’s hand to abandon the Heavy Rain Chronicles (something he was very pastionate about) and instead develop a Move addition, which let’s face it is hardly an essential addition given that Heavy Rain was quite heavily motion based with the SIXAXIS to start with. If that is true you have to wonder how much it soured the relationship.

Given how Cage often likes to push boundaries and experiment with new ways of interacting with games it wouldn’t surprise me if he announced their studio was doing something with Kinect too. Also let’s not forget Microsoft love to flash the cash at independent studios that have had a big high profile release on PlayStation…

    • Totally untrue. David Cage made it clear many times even before the game launched that there will be no sequel. It’s not his style.

      • I didn’t say a sequel – I said The Heavy Rain Chronicles. The series of post-release DLC episodes that would tell the backstory of each of the characters. The Madison Paige ‘chronicle’ (the taxidermist level from E3) was included free with the SE version but that was supposed to be the first of many – there is a section for them in the Heavy Rain menu!

Unfortunately Sony decided the studio should focus on Move support and the episodic content was shelved, meaning we will likely never know what additional stories were planned. And as I said earlier, rumours are Cage wasn’t too happy about that decision…

  7. Whilst they’d certainly reach more sales, I don’t think the 360 crowd is really the audience they want to target. Stereotypically the 360 is teenage COD lovers. Not saying that some people on the 360 wouldn’t buy it, not at all, but I also dont think that if Heavy Rain was multiplatform it would’ve sold as well.

Sony put a lot of body behind HR and the hype paid of for them. As multiplatform, I’m not sure it would work.

    • COD MW2 is the best selling PS3 game to date, so there are obviously a lot of “teenage COD lovers” on PS3 as well, so that’s not a really good point for that argument.

If the finished multi-plat product was the same as it was as a PS3 exclusive (as in it didn’t suffer from being ported from one platform to the next), then i think they would have made a lot more sales. Most (if not all) of my friends that are 360 only players wanted Heavy Rain and I’ve seen countless people on forums saying they wish it would come to 360.

      P.s

“Whilst they’d certainly reach more sales…”
“I also dont think that if Heavy Rain was multiplatform it would’ve sold as well”

      Kind of contradictory, isn’t it?

      • I’m not saying COD isn’t a big franchise on PS3, its a big franchise on every platform it graces. However the PS3 has a well established library of more experimental games that have proven succesful on the console, something we’ve really yet to see on the 360.

I really meant that if Heavy Rain was released now on 360 it would get more sales, but yes I didn’t phrase it very well. What I meant to say was that if HR was multiplatform from the very beginning and didnt have the backing of Sony, it wouldn’t have sold as well as it did. But yes I was quite contradictory there.

      • Yeah, agreed that the 360 has very lil (if any) “experimental” games. Sony has been very good at taking the risk and giving devs the support needed to make these kind of games possible (LBP comes to mind). It would be interesting to see how the 360′s fan-base would react to these types of games.

  8. I totally agree with Rob92. What made Heavy Rain the success it was, and the unique ideas and gameplay it put forward, had been the qualities of the PS3. With Blu-Ray, the capacities for developers are almost limitless, so there’s only one way to go if they want to create unique type of games like Heavy Rain.

    • Well that’s just wrong. Blu-ray = more space. Not better ideas or developers. While going single platform usually results in great support from the console manufacturer, you can hardly credit the blu-ray for Quantic Dreams hard word and creativity.

LBP is one of the more creative games to date, and that’s available on the PSN store at 2 gigs.

Now if you want to credit Sony for the great support that they give to these developers to make these unique games then I’m right behind you.

  9. Given how vocal the pro-Microsoft crowd have been about how much David Cage and Quantic Dream “suck” since Heavy Rain was announced as a PS3 exclusive, I’d wonder if it’s worth the man’s time trying to appease such a hostile audience.

Still, no harm in trying I suppose.

    • also considering at how much this audience praised “Alan Wake” as being “their” Heavy Rain and now look at the sales it got on the 360.

      • People who compare those two titles obviously never played them both. While they’re both very story heavy (and very good stories at that) Alan Wake is very much a 3rd person shooter, and Heavy Rain is…something very different all together.

It is a shame that the sales of Alan Wake were so low tho.

      • Would it not be great if QD ported HR to the X360 and Remedy ported Alan Wake to the PS3?

      • It would be great if 3rd party exclusives would stop all together (IMO, obviously). On the condition that Devs took the necessary measures to ensure parity of both versions, or course.

And with the 360′s ability to copy games to the HD, space shouldn’t be (as big) an issue any more. with Mass Effect 2, you can copy the disks to the HD and just use disk 2 to play the game, removing the need to swap disks.

    • @ Quinlank

The pro-Sony crowd lambasted Valve for there lack of support and interest in the PS3, but now Valve is lauding the PS3 version of Portal 2 as the best, so yeah, i think it’s still worth trying to capture that market and potentially double their revenue.
