If you’re like us you’ll already be swinging Move controllers around your head in an effort to slay your foes, defeat your opponents and otherwise claim victory in the digital playground. But it’s not all about Sony, Microsoft’s pitch at the motion-control market is looming on the horizon and there has been heated debate over which is best. Who will “beat” who? We think it’s all a matter of perspective…
The Games
We were probably all expecting nothing but a slew of mini-game compilations when Sony announced their motion controller at last year’s E3. Sure, we did end up with some of the staples; Sword-fighting, bowling, table tennis, hair-shaving – all are tried and tested motion control winners and there are bound to be more in the future too. But we’re also getting imaginative uses like Flight Control and EyePet for Move. Add to that the promise of more “hardcore” titles like SOCOM and Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition and Move has an extremely rounded catalogue of games either released or announced.
The Tech
The Wii was impressive with its waggle and Motion Plus, although perhaps under-utilised in software, is even more impressive. Move goes further than that with tracking and precision that works down to a sub-pixel level. The camera tracks the glowing orb but there are all manner of complicated gyroscopes, magnetometers and magic inside that little stick too. Sure, we all like waving our arms around at concerts, nightclubs and the funfair but it’s hardly the most precise way to pull off a headshot is it?
The Price
Alright, Move can get expensive if you’re buying loads of units and Navigation controllers. The entry level though, if you just want to try the tech and play a couple of games, is much lower than that of Kinect. You only really need one Move controller and the PSEye to get started and if you’re having loads of fun then you won’t mind adding extra units to expand on your experience.
The Control
Move is precise in all ranges of movement. You can point and move with pinpoint accuracy. The inclusion of those fancy buttons means you actually feel like you’re connected to something that’s happening. Go ahead; wiggle your index finger a bit. That doesn’t feel like you’re pulling a trigger does it? With Move you have feedback for your digits and that is a key point to making you feel immersed in the game you’re playing.
The Marketing
Pew pew. The venerable Mr Butler is not only Sony’s go-to guy for, well, everything. He’s also “Honorary VP of Bringing the Awesome” here at TSA, not many people (including Kevin and his Sony PR colleagues…) know that. Sony has stepped up a gear in all aspects of their marketing in this past year or so and Move is (at least in the US) no exception. Microsoft seems happy to follow Nintendo down the asinine path to plastic families miming to bad CGI. It’s degrading.
Don’t agree? See if the counter-points suit you better.

If KB is Honorary VP of “Bringing the Awesome” at TSA, who is President?
By the way, both articles are really interesting, and show the advantages of both.

“Don’t agree? See if the counter-points suit you better.”
LOL, that was by far the best part.
“We’re not trying to inform people here, we’re just giving two sets of opinions so that virtually everyone reading will like one of the articles because it matches their existing views, and nobody will be alienated.”
Excellent :D

I actually misread it the first time as “Don’t agree? See if the counter law suit suits you better.” Made me spray lemonade out my nose and over my work pc monitor until i realised my mistake. Sad times…

Let’s just hope that one doesn’t beat the other because of a bigger marketing budget.

Kinect will beat Move no doubt in my mind. These products are aimed at the casual market, well Kinect is for sure, Move seems to be trying to get both the Hardcore and causal. So, with every other TV advert being a Kinect one, (just like last years 360 adverts at christmas time, if i heard the song ‘ these girls fall like dominos’ one more time come january i could kill my self!!!) with ‘family perfect’ playing all the shovel ware titles under the sun, the casual market will flock to Kinect in the masses. The 360 console and Kinect is cheep, it will have loads of advertising, and is diffrent from the wii, the Move will be looked upon as a wiiHD by the casuals.
IMO from what i have seen and read about, the Move is better, but to the casual market, its just a wiiHD. Kinect is ‘ The True Next Generation in Gaming’ as MS will shout out no doubt

I should be getting Move next week for my birthday. Bit worried about the lack of titles but RE5 and Sports Champions should do me for a bit.
I really think Sony have missed an oppurtinity. By bringing Move out they couldve took away from Reach a bit. Bring KB over. It’s all a bit subdued I think.

If you want some recommendations on Move titles, i just tried out”The Shoot”s demo and found it to be a great ‘light gun’ style game, plus the store update with tumble and flight control HD are fantastic fun at a low-budget price. Also looking forward to the Heavy Rain and Res5 patches.
Going to try out RUSE later on, now that i have move to try it out with, and will will let you know how that goes.
…that’s if i can wrestle the controller off my wife, who seems intent on playing and vegetating to TV-Star. Looks to be an atrocious game from what she’s shown me…

The move Heavy Rain demo is amazing. It’s a shame that if you use a DS3/SA, and the move in the left hand, you still have to move with the Left Analog stick, and do the actions with L1, L2. I supose you must put your hand between the two analog sticks.

The main worry I have is that Move support is just going to feel very tacked on top of games like KZ3 and SOCOM 4. I’ve had a brief go with MAG, and whilst it’s not the most refined experience, it highlights one key deficiency with the Move, you are constantly needing to recalibrate the damned thing, and if you do it wrong this one time, then the game will play like total arse.
The Wiimote needs to be calibrated a single time for its pointer (I believe), and after that can, near as dammit, know where you’re pointing, no matter once. It’s not too bad when you’re using it more like a mouse, or controlling the orientation of something on screen, as in Flight Control and Table Tennis, but when you then have to work with deadzones, as well as more precise pointing, and do it really quickly? Well, it’ll take a while to get used to it, and it’ll take a while for the developers to get it just right. (by many accounts, RE5 is really clunky too)
There’s obviously no such troubles with the Kinect, because, as you said earlier, it’s not even going to try be a control system for Halo Reach or Gears 3. Maybe it’ll add a superfluous layer of gestures or voice over the top, but the playing field will remain level.
As for marketing, MS and Sony have failed equally, but in different ways. MS haven’t shown their tech properly, whereas Sony have really pushed out tons of concepts and prototypes for us to look at. But then aside from Kevin Butler, Sony simply don’t have a clue how to do adverts anymore. They come out horrendously. On the plus side, they’re not much worse than anything Kinect based, but even so…
But out of it all, Move still has the most potential to work well for ‘hardcore’ games. The Wii simply doesn’t have the raw grunt to do it, nor the 1st party support, whilst Kinect just doesn’t show any real promise in that direction, but Move has been shown and will come out integrated into so many of Sony’s future AAA titles.
For the Move, it really is the only strategy that Sony could follow, so well done on them for pursuing it to the fullest extent.
