Inside The BOOM™ Stick

Whilst the rest of us have had a rather spiffing weekend’s gaming with PlayStation Move, the chaps over at iFixit have a very different way of getting their kicks and instead of taking on family members at table tennis or gladitorial combat, have instead busied themselves with taking Sony’s new controller to pieces in one of their fantastic teardowns.

Amongst the internals of the controller there is a processor, accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth transmitter, vibrating motor, and even a MEMS compass. This, of course is no surprise as all of this has been known for some time, although it is quite an achievement by Sony to cram all the tech which appears in the most expensive smartphone and still sell the device for £35 or less.

Although there are few surprises inside the Move controller, there was what appeared to be a reference to an iPod on the circuit board, however once a further component was removed the full text of TRIPOD was revealed.

Other points of note, are that the battery is fully removable (and therefore replaceable) without the need for any soldering skills, and that the LED which lights up the glowing sphere is heatsunk to aid brightness and longevity.

Note: We don’t recommend taking your equipment to pieces as you’ll probably either break something or invalidate your warranty, but its nice to know if your Move controller does breakdown for some reason not covered by the warranty that according to iFixit,  it’s easily repairable.

  2. awsome, always nice to know what the insides of my favourite new controller looks like.

  3. Lovely to see under the bonnet, as such. Also, I’m guessing these batteries will last just as long as the DS3 jobbies. All four of my controllers are still brimming with life (3 x Dualshock and 1 x SixAxis).

  4. yes but will it blend?

    • Ha ha !!
That’s awesome ! “don’t breathe that in, that’s Move smoke”

    • lol

  5. I think the replacement or the ability to replace the battery is mandatory to sell your product in Europe?

    • iPhone?

      • If you mean the 3gs and older those where released before this directive.. The iPhone 4 also has a way of battery replacement as does the iPad but not as easy as with a battery cover.

      • Ok, thanks. I did wonder

  6. There’s so much green space left on that circuit board which begs the question ” Mini-Move, Move-Lite/Slim ?”

    • I don’t think so. If anything it’s been deliberatly expanded to fit the human hand, something I’m quite grateful for; it’s a delight to hold!

      • How about a Move mini for the dwarf community?

      • But what about the faeries ?!

      • “a delight to hold” -oi oi!

  7. There’s a programme series (can’t remember the name) on the Discovery channel that does the same. Haven’t seen any PS stuff on it…yet.
