Sony Sends Out PSP2 Dev-kits

New technology spotted in its natural habitat.

According to sources of industry site Develop, Sony are now actively sending out dev-kits for its upcoming PSP successor to key studios. Quoting a “significant launch window line-up”, both first-party and third-party developers are getting their hands on the new tech in preparation for the device’s rumoured 2011 launch.

Develop’s sources were naturally reluctant to go on the record regarding the existence of the kits. Unlike rogue (and perhaps death-wish fixated) Mortal Kombat developer Netherrealm Studios, of course, who recently claimed to have a dev-kit, commenting that the PSP2 is “powerful” before likely succumbing quietly to Sony’s team of legal stealth ninjas.

  1. 2011 launch? Does that give anything like enough time to properly develop software, or are we looking at straight PSP ports?

    • Exactly, 2011 launch would be retarded. Giving devs mere months to work out new kit would result in the worst launch ever, and Sony need to do better after the PS3′s launch. Which I liked personally, but the general consensus was quite poor.

      • yes but if the MK team have had a dev-kit for this amount of time theres a teeny weeny chance they’ve given other studios closer to home first dibs ie. naughty dog, media molecule, that game company.

        so who knows

  2. I don’t get why they’re being so quiet about it, presumably it’s so they don’t stop people buying all the iterations of the Psp. I’d like to know more details, what the spec is etc. The one thing i really want with the Psp2, though i know isn’t going to happen, is trophies that can be synched to the same account as the ps3. That would really get me playing.

    • As trophies have been quite successful, I would guess that Sony will include them if not something similar. They like their PSP/PS3 integration so again I would guess trophies will be included.

      • There’s a good reason the Psp doesn’t have trophies though, and i’m guessing that exact same reason will mean there wont be any on Psp2 either. That reason being how easilly the Psp is hacked

    • Christmas is coming up and since the PSP2 won’t be around by then, I’d expect Sony don’t want their PSP1 sales to be completely destroyed. Although Nintendo don’t seem to mind hurting their DS sales, with the 3DS coming out in Spring…

      • It’s IMPOSSIBLE to hurt DS sales, and I doubt many people in the world don’t own one now.

  4. Wonder if they have got some pretty good anti-piracy methods already built into the PSP2? Especially as the PSP has been hacked to shreds!

  5. Yeah they’ll need to get the hype going, I hope its like an improved PSP go.

    • Anything is better then the PspGo!!

  6. Awesome news, let’s hope they plan for an even tighter PSP2-PS3 integration than we’ve seen with the PSP so far. The potential is huge, but still untapped…

  7. one thing that will make me buy day one is if you can play psn games (maybe not all) on the new system. That woukd make me buy. Trophies would be cool. And a huge internal drive (for a handheld) i dont want disks. Bc with psp games and apps. And id be sold.

  8. things sony need otherwise they will fail at launch

    1. backward compatibility – just a must
    2. dual analog sticks – would open the window to better games and more fpss
    3. a good price, i mean seriously if this thing is costing more then 200 then it better be worth it! a ps3 is 300 …
    4. launch games! i.e uncharted, killzone, at least 1 big title
    5. some form of either friends list or trophies

    5 MUSTS i beleive

    • Agreed. But I reckon they definitely need more than 1 big launch title to be able to compete with the 3DS!

    • My list would be:

      1. Physical media. NOT umd but something silent and more battery friendly, like DS memory cards. Without the opportunity to profit from games the game stores don’t want to sell you this.
      2. Backward comp for PSN games.
      3. Backward comp for UMD games using umd reader accessory.
      4. User replaceable battery, unless battery life itself is amazing. It needs to be abøle to last a transatlantic flight, either on one charge or by swapping batteries.
      5. Standard micro usb for charging. You know, like the mobile business is standardising on.
6a. No region locking of games.
6b. One world one online store.
      7. Dual analog sticks. Because it would be nice, but mostly because if they don’t we’ll never heart the end of it.
      8. Full support for current wi-fi standards, including _all_ the encryption methods available on home routers.

  9. The PSPgo was a total failure in that it hardly sold, lets hope the PSP 2 is much better.
