Sunday Thoughts: PlayStation Plus

It has certainly been an interesting few months for PlayStation Plus. When it was first announced I could see the potential, but I could also see the big fat elephant in the room; what if paying Plus subscribers already have the content being given away for free?  Sure enough when month one started there was an influx of “got that, got that, THIS SUCKS!” that could be heard in forums across the land.

It’s a fair point though; as a paying subscriber shouldn’t you be entitled to something you actually want?  I was in seventh heaven though, because as a total utter stingy git I had none of what was being given away, as I tend to hoard my money like a mistrustful Dwarf.  The cries haven’t died out though as the months have gone on, to the point where the team at Sony must be feeling lower than the bumper on a boy racers Nova – a point that EU Blog man James Gallagher seems to agree with:

” I sometimes feel like I could announce the apocalypse and a few of you would be underwhelmed!”

This was said the day that it was announced Plus members would be getting ALL Fallout 3 DLC for free.  What I thought was an amazing deal seemed to ignite Twitter into a frenzy of “how DARE you get our hopes up over this crap”.  The same can be said for the much touted Plus demos and beta access.

We got the Mafia II demo a day early, which annoyed people as it was just a day; we got the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood beta a week early, which annoyed people as they wanted a Plus only beta; so then we got the big one – the Killzone 3 beta, almost exclusive to PlayStation Plus.  As soon as this was announced I saw people literally cursing Sony’s name for making it a Plus only affair.

So we want Plus only betas…that are available to everyone…but not?  Heck I’m confused, and I bet Sony are too, which leads me to ask – will Sony ever be able to please everyone?  It seems that now there are Plus and non Plus people Sony can do no right.  Do you subscribe?  If so have you been happy with the items made available to you?

  1. I’m a PS+ subscriber and so far very happy with most of the stuff. Obviously some of it isn’t interesting for me but I expected that.

  2. I’m still to be tempted by plus – it should be called something else to be honest, perhaps something that doesn’t imply it might appeal to those who use the store a lot and want more out of it

  3. I subscribed since the first day. Sure, I already had a lot of the stuff from the first two months, and the auto-download thing could definitely use some extra options, but I think it’s definitely been worthwhile. I’d been thinking of getting the fallout dlc, and that’s the year’s subs price right there (though I’d have bought a fallout goatee version cheaper). I’m also still enjoying Sam’n’Max, and the minis are sometimes fun, though not things I’d have bothered buying on my own.

It is usually the complainers who bother to comment, of course, but I’m a happy PS+er.

  4. If plus had been around when I first got my Playstation then I would have definitely registered for it. As it is I have already bought at least 80-90% of what has been on offer so it’s not been worth it for me.

I don’t understand the attitude that plus users should get demo’s first. You are not getting the demo’s any earlier, just non plus users are being made to wait. I certainly do not agree that non Plus users should be made to wait before they can purchase a full game (such as Tomb Raider)I think this is uneccesary and bad business practice.

I have been a very good customer of the PSN and I don’t see why I should be penalised because I have already bought the games that are offered by Plus. This just seems like a class system being built into the PSN rather than offering a service that offers more such as discounts and trials of full games.

If the money made from PSN+ went into researching new services that could be offered to plus users then I can see the point in that, but withholding demos and full games just makes no sense.

  5. im quite happy with plus and will continue to subscribe

  6. Despite being a PS3 owner for years i had bought very little off the store so plus is a great investment for me. Free games are what i subscribed for so anything else they throw in is a bonus for me

  7. If you were new to Playstation and didnt have any of the content you would of got about £150 worth of contect already, for £30. I dont see how anyone can complain about that.

  8. I don’t subscribe because I figured I would have bought most of the decent
content already. However for some people it’s a fantastic deal. For me I wanted more value add services not freebies. Add a cloud based browser and backup and auto trophy sync etc and I would be tempted…

  9. Here’s my main gripe with PS+; I keep an active update on what PS+ has to offer for your money. For me, there’s nearly NOTHING on it that interests me to sign up for it, with the exception of the Fallout 3 DLC, but I have most of them anyway, so that’s out the window. Personally, I don’t see anything there that would push me to paying up for it.

  10. I dont like the download media, i prefer disc’s, so i dont subscribe
