Some commentators on our recent Dead Nation review were wondering if the fact there is no voice chat for the online co-op mode in any way detracts from the collaborative experience. Well, yes, it’s not easy to keep the zombie horde at bay when you’re one hand texting your mate across the city.
Developers Housemarque are aware of the disappointment some people felt about the omission and, thankfully, they’re working on it. They said:
We know some of you are frustrated by the lack of voice chat support in Dead Nation’s online co-op mode. We realize many players have been very eager to join up and start taking care of the zombie nation and we greatly appreciate the continued support. Therefore, the team is currently working on the addition of voice chat capability and hope to introduce it as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, we’re keen to get as much feedback on the game as possible so we can further improve what we think is a great zombie game. We’ll be sure to keep everyone posted via the PlayStation.Blog and our Dead Nation Facebook page on when they can expect the voice chat update. We at Housemarque put our hearts and souls into the development of our games with the goal in mind to create thrilling gaming moments for players, so our hope is that everyone enjoys the finished product.
On that note, what are your favorite weapons so far? What upgrade path have you taken? Have you been able to conquer the Grim difficulty mode yet? Let us know in the comments, and we’ll have more to share with you soon about Dead Nation!
Sincerely,
Housemarque Team
Our recommendation? Buy it anyway. The voice chat patch is nice, but it’s still a great game without it.

I purchased the game, but haven’t played it yet. This is disappointing. I got it mainly to play online with a friend. It seems silly that voice chat isn’t included in an online CO-OP game. Not to start a fire, but this wouldn’t be an issue on LIVE. Even if the game it self didn’t have chat, you could use private or party chat.
O well. I’ll just wait until it’s patched. I’ve got a little back log to play through right now anyhow. Not to mention GT5!

There is a ten hour offline campaign you should also look into, you know.

Is that a different campaign/mode from the co-op? If it’s the same thing (just solo), then I’d rather wait until it’s patched and play with a friend.

I want this so badly, just don’t know if I should wait untill I do more GT5, but my will power is melting quickly.

I like the rifle, because it’s unlimited ammo.
The game is brilliant, the one “bad” thing I’ve noticed so far is that it takes ages to load. That’s it, and that’s not really a problem either.

I’m crap at it, good fun though!

Phew I am not the only one then, had to lower the difficulty to Braindead.

I started on grim difficulty. cant get passed the 2nd level.
A real shame there’s no voice chat, but then some of the PSN games this year don’t even have online multiplayer. IN THIS DAY AND AGE!!

What good game didn’t have an online aspect to it? I can’t think of any.

God Of War III, Darksiders, Arkham Asylum, Dantes Inferno, Heavy Rain, Just Cause 2, Dead Space…

Started on grim but had to drop it down to normal.
I know the darkness is supposed give it more atmosphere but at times I do find it a bit too dark.

FAIL!! I cannot believe that at this stage in the PS3’s lifecycle a developer would even think about releasing an online co-op game with no voice chat. Shocking!
Or maybe they thought that cross game chat would be here by now? Hmm, who’s to blame?
ElGuason
will be put on the “give it a try list.”

Really enjoying this. Looking for a co-op partner to do the game online with as nobody on my friends list owns this.
Lord_Gremlin
I haven’t even noticed lack of voice chat. Been busy blasting zombies to pieces.
I like how this game has huge hordes but no endless respawn, so you can actually plan your strategy and clear every single rotting bastard.
